Chapter 5 - The Cleaner’s Legacy"Put the ledger down, Arthur," Vanessa said, her voice terrifyingly steady as she aimed the barrel straight at her husband's heart. "You were always a weak, spineless coward. I built this empire for you from the ashes of your father’s bankrupt debts, and this is how you repay me? By letting a couple of pathetic ghosts ruin decades of meticulous work?"

Arthur stared down the barrel of the gun, his lips trembling. The color had completely vanished from his face, leaving him looking like an old, broken man.
"You... you killed the others, didn't you?" Arthur whispered, the reality finally shattering the delusions he had lived under for years. "The missing partners from the firm. The board members who wanted an audit... it wasn't natural causes."
"Of course it wasn't," Vanessa smiled, a dark, sadistic light dancing in her eyes. "People die every day, Arthur. Heart attacks, strokes, tragic accidents. But rich people die with beneficiaries who sign over power of attorney without asking questions. And you were always so very eager to sign whatever I put in front of you."
She shifted the barrel slightly, aiming it at Elena. "And as for you, my dear... you simply refused to stay dead. Such a persistent nuisance."
"You won't get away with this," Noah said, his eyes darting frantically around the room, looking for anything—a heavy book, a paperweight, a distraction—anything to bridge the distance between them. "The auditors are downstairs. The police are already on their way."
"The police?" Vanessa laughed, a clear, ringing sound that felt completely out of place in the blood-soaked room. "Noah, sweet child, do you honestly think I didn't fund the local precinct for the last ten years? By the time anyone shows up here, there won't be a house left standing."
She pulled a small, heavy black detonator from her pocket with her left hand, her thumb resting on the red toggle switch.
"A gas leak," Vanessa smiled sweetly. "A tragic, catastrophic explosion that wipes out the entire corrupt, dysfunctional family in one fiery sweep. How poetic. Exactly the ending the public expects."
Lily whimpered, burying her face in her mother’s torn shirt. Elena wrapped her arms around both children, bracing for the end.
Arthur looked at his children, then down at his wife—the woman he had trusted, the woman who had consumed his life. A sudden, wild resolve flared in his eyes. He didn't look like a coward anymore. He looked like a man with nothing left to lose.
"Vanessa," Arthur said softly, taking a slow step forward.
"Don't move, Arthur! I swear to God I'll press it!" Vanessa shrieked, her composure cracking for a split second as the gun wavered.
"You said I was weak," Arthur muttered, lunging forward with a speed no one expected from a man of his age.

Crack.
The silenced pistol discharged, sending a bullet tearing through Arthur’s shoulder. He cried out in agony, but he didn't stop. He slammed his body weight directly into Vanessa, tackling her backward through the open French doors leading out onto the second-story balcony.
