Chapter 5 - "YOU DARE STAND IN THIS COURTROOM?": THE CORRUPTION EXPOSEDTwo weeks later, the United States District Court in Chicago was packed to maximum capacity. The case had become the most publicized trial in modern American history, dubbed The Betrayal Trial.

Ryan and Linda sat at the defense table, wearing orange prison jumpsuits and heavy leg shackles. Gone were the tailored suits and arrogance. Ryan looked thin, haunted, and defeated, while Linda’s hair was wild and unkempt.
On our side sat the prosecution team led by United States Attorney Marcus Vance—Major Vance’s brother—alongside Colonel Bennett and myself. I was now seven and a half months pregnant, my strength returning thanks to proper medical care and safety.
Ryan’s new defense attorney, a notorious criminal lawyer named Victor Vance (no relation to Major Vance), attempted a desperate maneuver.
"Your Honor!" Victor argued before the judge. "The defense moves to dismiss all federal charges on the grounds of illegal evidence collection! Colonel Bennett used military intelligence apparatuses to spy on a civilian home without a civilian warrant!"
The courtroom murmured nervously. If the judge threw out the security footage, the prosecution's strongest evidence would vanish.
Judge Patricia Vance—a tough, non-nonsense federal judge—looked toward our table. "Does the prosecution have a response?"
Colonel Bennett stood up. He walked toward the podium, pulling a thick folder from his dress uniform briefcase.
"Your Honor," Bennett spoke, his command presence instantly filling the silent courtroom. "The defense claims the surveillance was illegal. However, we present into evidence Document 104-B, signed by Ryan Miller himself when he took his position as a chief software architect for military contractor Vanguard Tech."
Bennett placed the document on the clerk's desk.
"Under Section 8 of the National Security Clearance Agreement," Bennett continued, "any individual holding a Tier-5 clearance agrees to continuous, unannounced electronic monitoring of all personal devices and residences to prevent national security breaches. Ryan Miller consented to this surveillance the day he took the job. He was monitored not because he was a husband, but because he was a security threat."
The judge reviewed the document, her eyes sharp. She slammed her gavel down with a thunderous crack.
"Motion to dismiss is DENIED," Judge Vance ruled. "The evidence is entirely admissible."
Ryan slumped into his chair, burying his face in his hands.
"Furthermore," U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance stepped forward, "we call our next surprise witness to the stand: Ms. Sarah Jenkins."
A young woman in her late twenties walked into the courtroom, holding a cane. Ryan looked up, and the moment his eyes met hers, he gasped in sheer terror.
"Sarah?" Ryan whispered, his voice trembling.
Sarah took the witness stand, took the oath, and looked directly at Ryan with burning hatred.
"State your name and your relationship to the defendant for the record," Marcus instructed.
"My name is Sarah Jenkins," she said, her voice echoing through the silent court. "Four years ago, I was married to Ryan Miller. And four years ago, I lost my unborn baby after falling down a flight of stairs in our home."
The courtroom erupted into loud gasps. Reporters scribbled furiously on their pads.
"And did you fall, Ms. Jenkins?" Marcus asked gently.
Sarah leaned into the microphone, tears streaming down her face. "No. Ryan pushed me. He took out a two-million-dollar insurance policy on me three months before the 'accident.' I survived, but my baby didn't. He paid off local officials to cover it up as an accidental spill. He is a serial predator who marries women for their money and insurance policies!"
Linda stood up at the defense table, screaming like a lunatic. "She's lying! She's a crazy bitter ex! Shut her up!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendant's mother!"
Suddenly, as the chaos peaked, I felt a sharp, agonizing pain tear through my abdomen. I gasped, clutching my stomach.

"Emily?" Dad immediately rushed to my side, grabbing my hand. "What's wrong?!"
"Dad..." I choked out, sweat breaking out across my forehead. "The baby... the baby is coming NOW!"
