Chapter 6 - "CODE RED AT THE MATERNITY WARD": THE LAST DESPERATE MOVEThe courtroom descended into absolute chaos. Emergency medical technicians who had been stationed outside the courtroom rushed inside, placing me on a gurney. Colonel Bennett never let go of my hand as they wheeled me rapidly through the courthouse corridors toward an awaiting armored medical transport.

"Hold on, Emily! Keep breathing!" Dad encouraged, his voice tight with anxiety.

We arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital within minutes under heavy police escort. I was rushed straight into the emergency delivery room. The stress of the trial had triggered early labor at thirty-two weeks.

For three agonizing hours, Colonel Bennett stayed by my side in the delivery room, holding my hand while doctors worked tirelessly. At 2:14 AM, the faint, sweet sound of a baby crying echoed through the delivery room.

"It's a girl!" Dr. Jenkins announced, lifting my tiny, fragile daughter.

Tears poured down my face as they laid her on my chest. She was tiny, weighing just four pounds, but her heartbeat was strong, and her eyes were open, looking up at me.

"She’s beautiful, Emily," Dad whispered, his eyes moist with tears—the first time I had ever seen my strong military father cry. "What are you going to name her?"

"Victoria," I sobbed softly, kissing her tiny forehead. "Because she won."

While I was being moved to a private recovery room on the 8th floor, the dark shadow of Ryan’s past made its final, desperate move.

Outside the hospital, a black van pulled into the ambulance bay. Four armed men dressed as hospital maintenance workers slipped into the building through a bypassed security door. They weren't Ryan’s legal team; they were hitmen sent by Viktor Rostova—the head of the Eastern European gambling syndicate Ryan owed millions to.

With Ryan locked away forever, the syndicate realized that if Victoria survived, she would inherit the mother's vast family estate trust fund. They wanted the baby to hold as collateral against Colonel Bennett to force him to drop the federal asset forfeiture claims against their shell accounts.

On the 8th floor, the lights suddenly flickered and went out. The backup generators kicked on, bathing the hallways in an eerie red emergency light.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The hospital alarm sounded: "CODE RED. SECURITY BREACH ON FLOOR 8."

Inside my recovery room, the door swung open. A man in a surgical mask stepped inside, pulling a silenced pistol from beneath his coat. He pointed it directly at my bed, where I was holding little Victoria.

"Don't make a sound, lady," the man growled, stepping toward the crib. "Hand over the kid, and you might survive the night."

I screamed, pulling Victoria close to my chest.

Before the gunman could take another step, a shadow detached itself from the dark corner of the room behind him.

A thick, powerful arm wrapped around the gunman’s neck in a lethal sleeper hold. The gun was snatched from his hand with practiced military speed and dismantled into pieces in less than two seconds.

It was Colonel Bennett. He had never left the room.

CRACK!

Colonel Bennett slammed the intruder into the concrete wall, disarming and neutralizing him instantly. The man collapsed onto the floor, unconscious.

Outside in the hallway, gunshots rang out, followed by the heavy sound of tactical boots. Major Vance and a squad of elite Army Rangers swept through the corridor, neutralizing the remaining three syndicate hitmen before they could even reach the maternity ward doors.

Colonel Bennett adjusted his uniform, stepping over the unconscious hitman on the floor. He walked over to my bed, checking on me and baby Victoria.

"Are you two alright?" he asked calmly.

"Dad..." I gasped, shaking uncontrollably. "Who were those men?!"

"They were the people who thought they could threaten my granddaughter," Bennett said, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone and dialing a number.

"Who are you calling?" I asked.

"The Director of the CIA," Colonel Bennett replied coldly. "It’s time to eliminate the syndicate."
