Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a BetrayalThe emergency board meeting of Lawson Technologies did not take place in the sleek glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor overlooking San Francisco Bay.

It took place in a sterile, windowless conference room in the basement of the hotel, lit by flickering fluorescent tubes that hummed an irritating, high-pitched note.

Around the mahogany table sat five terrified board members, sweating through their expensive Italian shirts. At the head of the table sat Chloe Vance. She wasn't wearing her cardigan anymore; Harrison’s private assistant had brought her a sharp, midnight-blue tailored pantsuit from her personal city apartment. With her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, she looked less like a battered housewife and more like an apex predator sizing up its prey.

Garrett was forced to sit in the metal folding chair at the very foot of the table—the exact same kind of cheap chair he had kicked out from under Martha less than an hour ago.

"This is completely illegal," stammered Richard Sterling, the senior venture partner who had backed Garrett from day one. He tried to puff out his chest, but his shaking hands gave him away. "You can't just seize corporate assets based on a domestic dispute, Miss Vance—or whatever your real name is."

Chloe didn't look up from the thick leather-bound dossier spread out before her. She slowly turned a page, the sound cutting sharply through the tense silence.

"Mr. Sterling," Chloe said softly, her voice devoid of any warmth. "Let’s talk about your own investments for a moment. Specifically, the shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under your wife's maiden name that has been systematically siphoning intellectual property out of Lawson Technologies and selling it to our direct competitor in Shenzhen."

Sterling’s face went from pale to a terrifying, mottled purple. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

"If you prefer," Chloe continued calmly, sliding a single printed sheet across the table toward him, "we can let the FBI explain it to you. Or you can vote unanimously to dissolve the board, strip Garrett of all voting rights, and transfer 100% of the company's remaining IP and remaining liquid capital to the Vance Global restructuring fund."

Sterling looked around the table. Every single board member was staring fixedly at their hands, avoiding eye contact at all costs. They knew the game was over. Vance Global didn't just dominate the tech sector; it owned the regulatory bodies, the banking pipelines, and the legal frameworks that kept Silicon Valley breathing.

"I... I vote in favor," Sterling whispered, his head bowed.

"Unanimous," Chloe announced, tapping a silver pen against the edge of the table. "Good. Meeting adjourned."

As the terrified executives practically trampled each other rushing out of the room, Garrett remained frozen in his chair. His eyes were bloodshot, his designer tie pulled loose, hanging like a noose around his neck.

"Chloe," he choked out, his voice cracking with desperate theatricality. He slid out of his chair, dropping to his knees on the industrial carpet right in front of her. "Chloe, please. Look at me. We have a son. Leo needs his father. I was... I was stressed. Eleanor manipulated me, you know how she is! She pushed me into Vanessa's arms, she forced me to sign those papers—"

Chloe looked down at him. There was no anger left in her eyes—only a profound, chilling emptiness.

"Stand up, Garrett," she said quietly.

He looked up, a pathetic flicker of hope crossing his tear-streaked face. He reached out to grab the hem of her pantsuit. "You still love me. I know you do. Three years can't just—"

"Stand up," she repeated, her voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying authority of a woman who commanded billions.

Garrett scrambled to his feet, trembling.

"You thought you married a helpless orphan from a cow-town," Chloe said, rising slowly from her chair so she towered over him. "You thought you could beat me down, isolate me from my family, and steal my son's inheritance to fund a woman who views you as nothing more than a useful idiot."

"That's not true—"

"When you kicked that chair out from under my mother," Chloe interrupted, her voice turning to ice, "you didn't just assault an elderly woman. You woke up the wrong dragon."

The heavy metal door of the conference room swung open with a loud bang.

Two federal marshals stepped inside, their badges gleaming under the flickering fluorescent lights. Behind them stood Vanessa Cole, wearing handcuffs.

Garrett whipped around, staring in sheer disbelief. "Vanessa? What is this? Why are you in cuffs?"

May you like

Vanessa didn't look at him. Her eyes were fixed on the floor, her previous arrogance completely shattered. "He didn't just embezzle from the company, Mr. Lawson," one of the marshals said, stepping forward and clamping a cold pair of steel cuffs around Garrett's wrists with a definitive click. "Miss Cole here gave us the complete ledger. You both drained the corporate pension funds into offshore accounts. You're going away for a very long time."

As Garrett screamed, thrashing against the marshals as they dragged him toward the door, Chloe didn't even flinch. She simply watched him go, turning the page in her dossier to look at the next item on her agenda.
