Chapter 7 - The Trial of Garrett LawsonThree months later, Courtroom 402 of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California was packed to absolute capacity.

The air inside the wood-paneled room was thick with tension. Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse steps all morning as reporters scrambled for a glimpse of the disgraced tech prodigy who had tried to steal an empire and lost everything.

Garrett Lawson sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. His hair was unwashed, his beard was overgrown, and his eyes darted nervously around the room. He looked nothing like the confident billionaire who had swaggered into his son's christening ballroom three months ago.

At the prosecution table sat Chloe Vance, flanked by her father Harrison and their legal team. She wore a sleek charcoal-gray blazer, her expression calm, serene, and completely unreadable.

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Montgomery tapped her gavel sharply against the wooden block.

"Order in the court," Judge Montgomery announced, her voice carrying authority across the silent room. "We are here for the sentencing in the matter of United States versus Garrett Lawson."

The judge adjusted her glasses, looking down at the thick stack of federal documents before her.

"Mr. Lawson, you have been convicted on twelve counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, corporate embezzlement, and identity theft involving the fraudulent falsification of trust documents belonging to a minor," Judge Montgomery read, her tone cold and clinical. "The financial damage you inflicted not only crippled Lawson Technologies but systematically targeted vulnerable family members and violated federal banking laws on a massive scale."

Garrett slowly stood up, his public defender gently pulling on his sleeve to guide him.

"Your Honor," Garrett stammered, his voice cracking, sounding like a terrified schoolboy rather than a tech mogul. "Please. I... I made mistakes in business. The market was volatile, the pressure was immense. My mother pushed me, my business partners abandoned me... I never meant to hurt my family. I love my son."

Judge Montgomery raised an eyebrow, looking down at him with undisguised contempt.

"You didn't just make mistakes, Mr. Lawson," the judge said firmly. "You engaged in calculated, predatory greed. You abused your wife, assaulted an elderly woman in front of hundreds of witnesses, and tried to rob your own flesh and blood to fund a lavish lifestyle with your co-conspirator."

The judge paused, taking a slow breath before delivering the final verdict.

"For the crimes of wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and identity theft, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, hidden offshore accounts, and future earnings are hereby ordered forfeited to satisfy restitution claims."

Bang.

The gavel came down with a final, echoing crash.

Garrett let out a ragged, desperate gasp, his knees buckling beneath him as two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed him firmly by the shoulders, and handcuffed his wrists behind his back.

As they dragged him away toward the holding cells, Garrett turned his head desperately toward the gallery, locking eyes with Chloe for one last, agonizing second.

Chloe didn't blink. She didn't smile. She simply looked at him the way a scientist might look at a specimen under a microscope—detached, analytical, and entirely unimpressed.

The heavy wooden doors swung shut behind him, closing the book on Garrett Lawson's brief, catastrophic reign.
