Chapter 8 - Shadows of the PastThat evening, the private terrace of Vance Global Tower was bathed in the warm, golden glow of string lights and the twinkling reflection of the San Francisco skyline across the bay.

Chloe stood leaning against the glass railing, holding a glass of sparkling cider. The cool ocean breeze caught the ends of her dark hair, gently framing her face.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

"Penny for your thoughts, sweetheart," Harrison Vance said gently, walking up beside her and handing her a folded piece of heavy parchment paper.

Chloe took the paper, unfolding it. It was a certified copy of the final family court decree—granting her absolute, permanent, unchallengeable sole custody of young Leo, with all parental rights legally stripped from Garrett Lawson.

"I was just thinking about the day I met him," Chloe said softly, staring out at the bay. "Three years ago, working in that little bookstore in Portland. He came in wearing a cheap suit, talking big about changing the world with code. I thought he was ambitious. I thought he was genuine."

Harrison wrapped a warm, strong arm around his daughter's shoulders, pulling her close. "You wanted to build a life on your own terms, Chloe. There's no shame in wanting love that doesn't depend on a billionaire's bank account."

"No," Chloe agreed, a gentle, genuine smile spreading across her face. "There isn't. But I learned something much more important, Dad."

"And what's that?"

"Power isn't something you inherit," Chloe said, turning her gaze toward the brightly lit living room inside the penthouse, where Martha was currently reading a storybook to a sleepy, laughing little boy. "And it's certainly not something a man can give you or take away from you. Power is what remains when everything artificial is stripped away, and you're left standing on your own two feet."

Harrison smiled proudly, raising his glass in a silent toast. "Your grandfather would have been damn proud of you, Chloe."

"He already is," Chloe whispered, clinking her glass against her father's.
