Chapter 5 - The Corporate PurgeBack at Vance Global Tower, the atmosphere was the exact opposite of a prison cell. It was an arena of absolute power and surgical precision.

Chloe stood in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling windows on the forty-fifth floor, watching the tiny red taillights of commuter traffic crawl across the Golden Gate Bridge like lines of ants.

David Vance walked into the office carrying a sleek, brushed-aluminum briefcase. He placed it on the mahogany desk and popped open the latches.

"It’s done, Chloe," David said, stepping back with a respectful nod. "Lawson Technologies has been officially dissolved as an independent entity. All remaining physical assets, server farms, and intellectual property have been absorbed into Vance Global's tech division. We didn't even have to fight the creditors; they backed down the moment they saw our legal team's letterhead."

Chloe didn't turn around immediately. She adjusted the cuffs of her midnight-blue suit jacket, her reflection staring back at her in the dark glass.

"And Vanessa Cole?" Chloe asked calmly.

"Cooperatively singing like a canary," David replied with a dry smirk. "She handed over every single encrypted chat log, offshore account number, and internal memo proving that Garrett knew about the fraudulent trust transfers from day one. She’s cutting a deal with the federal prosecutor for witness protection, trading Garrett's freedom for her own immunity."

Chloe finally turned around, a faint, cold smile playing on her lips. "Let her go. She’s a symptom, not the disease. Garrett and Eleanor built their entire lives on sand, thinking their last name and expensive suits could protect them from reality."

"What about the public relations fallout?" David asked, pulling a tablet from his briefcase and tapping the screen. "The tech blogs are having a field day. They're calling it the 'Fall of the Silicon Prince.' Some outlets are digging into your past—how you met Garrett three years ago while working at a small organic bookstore in Portland before hiding your true identity."

"Let them talk," Chloe said evenly, walking over to her desk and sitting down in her grandfather's leather chair. "The truth is far more boring than the rumors. I wanted to see if a man could love me for who I was, without my father's bank account attached to my name."

David raised an eyebrow. "And did he?"

"No," Chloe replied simply, picking up a silver fountain pen and tapping it gently against the blotter. "He loved the idea of a trophy wife he could control. The moment he couldn't control me, he tried to break me. And when he tried to break my family..." She paused, her eyes narrowing into dangerous, glittering slivers. "...he signed his own death warrant."

The intercom on her desk chimed softly.

"Miss Vance?" her executive assistant's voice came through the speaker. "Your father is on line one, and Ms. Martha is downstairs in the lobby, asking if you want to join her for lunch at the private garden terrace."

Chloe’s severe expression instantly melted into a warm, genuine smile.

"Tell Mom I'll be down in five minutes," Chloe said into the intercom. "And patch my father through."

She pressed the blinking button on her console.

"Dad," Chloe said, leaning back comfortably in her chair. "How are the markets treating us today?"

"Better than expected, sweetheart," Harrison’s rich, resonant voice filled the office. "In fact, the board just voted unanimously to approve your appointment as Executive Vice President of Global Operations. Effective immediately."

Chloe looked down at her desk—at the nameplate engraved with her true name, at the family portrait of her, her father, and young Leo smiling in the sunshine of their Oregon farm.

"Thank you, Dad," Chloe said softly. "I'm ready."
