Chapter 1 - The First Thread Unravels

The heavy fabric of my wedding dress felt like lead against my legs as I pushed open the passenger door of Adrien’s car.
“Don’t do this, Nat,” he called out softly, his voice a smooth stream of calculated manipulation. “We can still make this work. Clare gets her certificate, and you and I keep everything else.”
I didn’t look back. I stepped out onto the wet Chicago pavement, letting the door slam shut with a definitive, metallic thud. The sound of the el train overhead vibrated through the soles of my shoes. For ten years, I had built a life around Adrien Sterling. I had spent sleepless nights coding the core algorithms of Vanguard Tech, the enterprise security firm that he now paraded around as his personal empire, while he played the visionary CEO to venture capitalists.
He thought I was just the emotional anchor. The supportive partner who would cry, break a few plates, and eventually accept his twisted arrangement out of habit and comfort.
He had no idea what was sitting on my laptop back at our penthouse.
Inside the lobby, the doorman gave me a sympathetic nod, noticing the pale roses in my hair. I bypassed the elevator and took the stairs, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Not from grief—though that cold, hollow terror was there—but from pure, unadulterated adrenaline.
Eight weeks pregnant.
I placed a trembling hand over my flat stomach as I unlocked the penthouse door. The apartment was silent, smelling faintly of the sandalwood cologne Adrien wore. On the kitchen island sat his leather briefcase.
I walked straight to my home office, opened my laptop, and bypassed the encrypted firewall with a master key he had foolishly allowed me to keep as a token of my "co-ownership."
Vanguard Tech wasn’t just a company. It was my intellectual property. Every line of code, every encryption protocol, and every database structure was legally registered under a dormant LLC—Aegis Core—solely owned by me. Adrien was merely the licensee.
And as of today, the license had just been revoked for breach of contract, specifically concerning company stability and executive integrity clauses.

With three rapid keystrokes, I executed the global kill-switch.
Across Chicago, inside Vanguard Tech's gleaming glass headquarters, three hundred employee monitors went completely black. And Adrien’s empire died.
