Chapter 5 - The Queen’s GambitThe glass-walled executive boardroom on the 40th floor of the Vanguard building was dead silent.

The emergency board meeting had been called at 5:30 PM. When I walked through the double doors at precisely 6:00 PM, all five board members were seated around the mahogany table. Adrien sat at the head, looking pale, his tie slightly unbuttoned. Beside him sat corporate counsel, looking equally grim.

As I entered, wearing a sharp black blazer and carrying a single leather folder, all eyes turned toward me.

“What is she doing here?” demanded Arthur Vance, the senior venture capitalist and primary investor. “Sterling, you said this meeting was to address the server outage, not to invite outsiders.”

“She’s not an outsider, Arthur,” I said, walking calmly to the opposite end of the table and pulling out the chair facing Adrien. “She’s the sole owner of Aegis Core, the underlying technology that keeps this entire enterprise breathing.”

Adrien stood up abruptly, slamming his palms onto the table. “Don't listen to her, Arthur! She’s experiencing a personal breakdown. She’s attempting a hostile corporate sabotage out of spite!”

“Spite?” I opened my folder and slid five identical copies of a legal document across the polished wood. “Let’s talk facts, gentlemen. According to Section 9 of the original licensing agreement between Vanguard and Aegis Core, any breach of executive ethics, fraudulent misrepresentation of company stability, or unauthorized corporate liability immediately voids the software license.”

Arthur Vance picked up the document, his eyes scanning the legal jargon. “What breach? Sterling has been our CEO for five years without issue.”

“Until this morning,” I replied smoothly. “When it came to light that Mr. Sterling utilized corporate resources to fund personal expenses, engaged in gross misconduct, and exposed the company to catastrophic regulatory risk.”

“Prove it!” Adrien shouted, his voice cracking with panic.

I didn't blink. I pulled out my phone, connected it to the boardroom’s main projector screen, and tapped a single button.

Instantly, high-resolution bank statements, corporate expense reports showing luxury apartments purchased for Clare, and a recorded audio confession of Adrien admitting to commingling company funds flashed across the 80-inch screen in glowing white text.

The entire boardroom went completely, terrifyingly silent.
