Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE BASEMENT STUDIOThe interior of the north wing was nothing like the opulent, sunlit grandeur of the rest of the mansion.

It was a cavernous, soundproofed bunker disguised as an art studio. Floor-to-ceiling monitors lined the mahogany walls, casting a sickly, fluorescent blue wash across rows of computer towers, mixing boards, and digital recording equipment.
Valeria stepped inside, her jaw slack. "What is this place?"
"My wife's private studio," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a heavy, hollow register. "Or so I was told when we bought this estate three years ago."
He walked over to a central leather console and tapped a sequence of keys. A massive central screen flickered to life, illuminating hundreds of neatly organized digital folders labeled with dates, times, and biometric markers.
"Elena was an acoustic engineer," Alejandro continued, walking slowly past the banks of monitors. "She loved sound. She said she wanted a private workspace where she could design high-end acoustic panels without the echo of the grand halls bothering her. I gave her the budget. I gave her the contractors. I never asked questions."
He stopped in front of a massive mixing desk and pointed to a secondary monitor.
"She died in the ambush two years ago," Alejandro said, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the console. "Or at least, that’s what the police report said. A car bomb on Avenida Vasconcelos. The DNA matched the teeth found in the wreckage. I buried an empty casket with a few charred bones."
Valeria stepped closer, her eyes scanning the glowing screen. "If she died... then who is using this equipment?"
"Look at the file timestamps, Valeria," Alejandro whispered.
Valeria leaned in. Her eyes scanned the file list. File #742: Date: Yesterday, 11:45 PM. Subject: Mateo_Sleep_Monitoring.wav File #743: Date: Yesterday, 11:50 PM. Subject: Mateo_Audio_Trigger_B-4.wav
Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. "Someone... someone has been recording Mateo. Every scream. Every cry. Every nightmare."
"Not just recording," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, dead calm. "Synthesizing. Broadcasting."
He hit a play button on the console.
Static hissed through high-end studio monitors, followed immediately by the blood-curdling sound of a woman screaming in agony—Elena’s voice, clear as crystal, echoing through the hidden room.
“Mateo! Run! They’re coming!”
Valeria gasped, clapping her hands over her ears. "That's... that's the voice of his mother! Is that from the day of the ambush?"
"No," Alejandro said, turning to face her, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying realization. "I analyzed the audio wave profiles last week. That recording was generated digitally using neural-voice synthesis. Someone inside this house—using a high-powered directional speaker hidden in the nursery air vents—has been playing my dead wife’s voice to my four-year-old son every single night at 3:00 AM."
The room spun. Valeria grabbed the back of a swivel chair to keep from collapsing.
"Why?" she whispered, horror gripping her chest. "Why would anyone torture a little boy like that?"
"Because," a cold, metallic voice echoed from the doorway behind them, "a happy, well-adjusted heir is a dangerous thing. Especially when he’s standing between the Ríos empire and the person who actually runs it."

Alejandro and Valeria whipped around simultaneously.
Standing in the doorway of the hidden studio, holding a silenced 9mm Beretta aimed squarely at Alejandro’s chest, was Doña Socorro.
