Chapter 5 - IN THE DARKNESSThe deafening crack of a silenced gunshot echoed through the confined space, a blinding muzzle flash cutting through the blackness like lightning.

The bullet shattered a computer monitor behind Valeria in a shower of sparks and shattered glass.
"Agh!" Valeria screamed, ducking instinctively and rolling behind the heavy steel base of the mixing console.
"Socorro, drop the gun!" Alejandro’s voice roared from across the room, followed immediately by the heavy thud of a body colliding with furniture, the sound of breaking wood, and furious hand-to-hand struggle.
Valeria scrambled in the dark, her hands searching frantically across the floor for anything heavy. Her fingers brushed against a thick, braided power cord. She yanked it with all her might.
SCREEECH.
A heavy server rack groaned and tipped over, crashing down directly into the center of the room.
A sharp gasp of pain cut through the air, followed by the metallic clatter of a pistol sliding across the marble floor.
"Valeria! The wall switch by the door—hit it!" Alejandro commanded, his breathing ragged and heavy.
Valeria scrambled on her hands and knees toward the doorway, her fingers frantically tapping along the wood paneling until her palm hit a toggle switch.
The overhead fluorescent lights flickered back on.
The scene in the studio was absolute carnage.
Monitors were smashed, computer towers were smoking, and Doña Socorro was pinned facedown against the floor, Alejandro’s knee planted squarely between her shoulder blades, his thick hand twisted cruelly into her gray hair.
Socorro was bleeding from a deep gash on her forehead, but a twisted, triumphant grin was plastered across her pale face.
"You're... you're too late, Alejandro," she choked out, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the floor. "Look at the master console."
Alejandro glanced over his shoulder.
On the central screen, a digital progress bar was blinking rapidly in bright red numbers: UPLOAD IN PROGRESS: 98%... 99%... 100%.
Beneath it, a notification read: DATA PACKET TRANSMITTED SUCCESSFULLY TO: FEDERAL ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE & RIVALS SINALOA.
"What did you just do?" Alejandro demanded, pressing his knee down harder until Socorro winced in agony.
"I didn't just record Mateo's torture," Socorro laughed hysterically, her eyes wild with madness. "I recorded every single ledger, every offshore account number, every bribe paid to every politician in Mexico over the last ten years from this very terminal. The moment I initiated the dead-man's switch... it all went out to the federal prosecutor and your biggest enemies."
Alejandro’s face went completely white. For the first time since Valeria had met him, the invincible cartel boss looked mortal.
The doors to the north wing suddenly burst open with a deafening bang.
Four armed guards rushed in, weapons drawn, led by the head of security, Carlos.
"Boss! We heard shots—" Carlos stopped dead in his tracks, staring at Socorro pinned to the floor and the smoking computer terminals.
"Secure her," Alejandro ordered, his voice devoid of all emotion as he stood up slowly. "Lock her in the basement holding cells. No food, no water, no visitors. If anyone speaks to her, execute them."
"Boss, what about the network alert?" Carlos asked nervously, holding up his encrypted satellite phone. "Our secure servers are getting flooded. Every federal agency in the country just received an anonymous drop containing our entire financial archive."

Alejandro stared down at the blinking screens. The empire he and his father had spent thirty years building was collapsing in real-time, transmitted across the globe by an elderly woman he had trusted with his life.
"Let them come," Alejandro said quietly, turning around to look at Valeria, who was standing near the door, trembling from head to toe. "The empire is gone. But my son is alive."
