Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM IN SANTA CATARINAThe sterile white walls of the Santa Catarina private clinic smelled faintly of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol.

Valeria sat in a hard plastic chair beside Hospital Bed 402, her hands tightly gripping her little brother Leo’s tiny, pale hand. Leo was eight years old, with dark curls just like Mateo’s, though his skin was translucent and paper-thin from his failing heart.

"The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning, señorita," Dr. Morales said, stepping into the room with a clipboard in his hands, a wide smile on his face. "The wire transfer from the Ríos account cleared thirty minutes ago in full. All two hundred thousand pesos. Your brother is going to get his new heart."

Tears streamed down Valeria’s cheeks. She stood up and threw her arms around the doctor. "Thank you, Dr. Morales! Thank you so much!"

"Don't thank me, thank whoever signed that check," the doctor smiled warmly. "People with that kind of money usually don't care about kids like Leo. You must have worked for a very powerful man."

"You have no idea," Valeria whispered, looking back down at Leo, who smiled weakly up at her from the pillows.

"Don't worry, hermanita," Leo whispered, his voice raspy. "The doctor said I'm going to be able to run and play soccer soon. Just like normal kids."

"I know, baby. I know," Valeria smiled, kissing his forehead.

Suddenly, the television mounted on the wall above the bed—which had been playing a morning cartoon show—cut abruptly to a breaking news broadcast.

“BREAKING NEWS: Massive Federal Raid Underway at San Pedro Garza García Estate of Alleged Cartel Kingpin Alejandro Ríos!”

Valeria froze. Her head whipped around toward the screen.

Helicopter footage showed heavily armed federal police in green camouflage and tactical helmets storming the iron gates of the mansion where she had worked less than two hours ago. Armored personnel carriers were ramming through the front courtyard walls.

“Authorities confirm that an anonymous data leak received late last night provided a complete digital master archive of the Ríos cartel's financial network, money laundering operations, and bribery rings,” the news anchor reported urgently. “Federal agents are currently searching the estate for Alejandro Ríos and his associates. However, initial reports indicate the mansion’s master safe and private quarters appear to have been completely cleaned out hours before the raid.”

Valeria’s breath hitched. Cleaned out?

Before she could process the thought, the door to Hospital Bed 402 slowly pushed open.

A man stepped into the room.

He wasn't wearing his tailored black suit anymore. He wore a dark tactical turtleneck and cargo pants, his face shadowed by the brim of a black baseball cap. But there was no mistaking those piercing, dangerous dark eyes.

Alejandro Ríos.

Dr. Morales gasped, stumbling backward against the medical cart. "Who... who are you? Security! Security!"

Alejandro didn't draw a weapon. He simply raised two fingers, and outside the glass door of the hospital room, two armed private bodyguards stepped into view, calmly holding up their badges to silence the doctor.

Alejandro walked slowly toward Valeria, stopping two feet away.

"Mr. Ríos," Valeria breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What are you doing here? The federal police are raiding your home!"

"Let them raid it," Alejandro said calmly, his voice smooth and controlled. "The walls of that mansion were built on blood and secrets, Valeria. It was time for it to burn."

"But... your money, your empire—"

"Empire is just a word," Alejandro interrupted, glancing briefly down at little Leo, who was staring at him with wide, curious eyes. Then he looked back at Valeria. "When Socorro's data packet went out to the feds, it didn't just expose my accounts. It exposed every rival boss who had been paying protection money to my inner circle. By noon today, half the cartel leaders in Mexico will be hunting each other in a civil war."

Alejandro reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of sleek, heavy keys on a titanium ring.

"And you?" Valeria asked, her voice trembling. "Where will you go?"

"I don't go back," Alejandro said quietly. "My private jet is waiting at Monterrey International. Mateo is already onboard, sitting in the pilot's lap playing with the radio dials."

May you like

He held out the titanium key ring toward Valeria.

"I came here because a man of my word always settles his debts," Alejandro said, his dark eyes softening just a fraction. "And because... Mateo hasn't stopped asking for his big sister all morning."
