Chapter 8 - THE ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAINSThe private twin-engine jet cut through the blinding white clouds, climbing steadily toward the jagged peaks of the Sierra Madre mountains before banking north toward the United States border.

Inside the luxurious leather cabin, the atmosphere was a million miles away from the cold, blood-soaked marble halls of San Pedro Garza García.
Mateo was curled up on the plush leather couch, wearing a soft gray sweater, fast asleep with his head resting comfortably in Valeria’s lap. She gently ran her fingers through his dark curls, watching the endless sea of clouds drift past the triple-paned oval window.
Alejandro sat across from them in an executive swivel chair, nursing a cup of black coffee, watching his son with an expression of profound, quiet peace that Valeria had never seen on his face before.
"He hasn't had a single nightmare since we crossed the state line," Valeria murmured softly, not wanting to wake the boy.
"He knows the ghosts are gone," Alejandro replied, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "The speakers in the north wing... my tech team dismantled them before the feds breached the gates. Socorro built a cage inside my own home, and I was too blind, too arrogant, to see it."
"You couldn't have known," Valeria said gently. "She played her part for twenty years."
"People in my world live and die by paranoia, Valeria," Alejandro said, his voice hardening slightly. "Except for you. You walked into that house with a bucket and a broken heart, and you saw straight through the illusions that fooled hardened criminals."
Valeria looked down at her hands. "I just wanted to save my brother. Everything else... it just happened."
"Life rarely asks us what we want, muchacha," Alejandro said, setting his coffee cup down on the burlwood table. "It only asks us what we're willing to sacrifice when the walls come crashing down."
The pilot's voice crackled over the intercom: "Mr. Ríos, we are thirty minutes out from our private airstrip in Montana. Federal airspace clearance is confirmed under our secondary registry. We're clear."
"Copy that," Alejandro replied into the cabin mic.
He stood up, walked over to the couch, and sat down on the edge of the cushion opposite Valeria. He reached out and gently pulled a soft wool blanket over Mateo’s shoulders.
"So," Alejandro looked up, locking his piercing dark eyes onto Valeria's. "What happens when we land?"
"I... I don't know," Valeria admitted, her heart doing a strange, unexpected flip. "Leo is safe in Santa Catarina with the best doctors. My mother is going to join us next week. But me? I've never left Mexico before."
"Good," Alejandro said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Because you're not going back. In Montana, I own a ranch fifty miles from the nearest town. No guards. No cartels. No politics."
Valeria's breath caught. "Mr. Ríos—"
"Alejandro," he corrected softly. "And I don't need a maid up there, Valeria. But I do need someone who isn't afraid of the dark. Someone who knows how to put broken pieces back together."
Mateo stirred in his sleep, letting out a soft sigh, his tiny hand instinctively reaching out to grab Valeria's fingers and holding on tight.

Valeria looked down at the sleeping boy, then up at the formidable, dangerous man who had once terrified half a nation—and realized, with a sudden, breathless rush of clarity, that the terrifying cartel boss wasn't the monster of this story.
He was just another broken soul waiting for someone brave enough to stay.
