Chapter 10 - THE QUEEN'S GAMBITThe grand charity gala at the Grand Imperial Ballroom was the social event of the season, drawing the elite of the city’s high society, corporate titans, and influential political figures.

As I stepped out of the private chauffeured limousine draped in a stunning, custom-tailored emerald-green silk evening gown that caught the chandelier light with every movement, the flashbulbs of dozens of photographers erupted like a wall of lightning.
Microphones thrust forward from every direction, and reporters shouted over one another in a chaotic frenzy.
"Ms. Moretti! Ms. Moretti! Over here!"
"To what do you attribute your unprecedented corporate success since taking over Moretti Holdings?"

Without waiting for another question, I turned gracefully and walked through the towering glass doors into the glittering ballroom.
Inside, the orchestra swelled into a magnificent, triumphant symphony. Heads turned in unison as I entered, a ripple of awed silence washing over the room as hundreds of powerful people stepped back to clear a path straight to the center of the floor.
No one whispered behind my back anymore. No one looked down at me with condescending pity. No one dared to wonder if I was insecure, or irrational, or weak.

I walked forward with my head held high, my posture absolute, owning every single inch of the room, the empire, and my own destiny.
The game was over. The trap had been sprung. And the queen had not only survived the board—she had taken the entire kingdom.
