Chapter 9 - ECHOES IN THE DARKSix months after the trial and the total restructuring of Moretti Holdings, the autumn wind carried a sharp, crisp chill through the city streets.

I sat in the leather armchair of my private study in the penthouse, reviewing the final international asset transfers on my tablet. The silence of the apartment was peaceful, no longer haunted by whispered secrets, hidden laptops, or the lingering scent of someone else's perfume on a husband's jacket.

My phone buzzed on the side table.

It was an encrypted notification from an anonymous federal penitentiary relay system—a standard legal update regarding inmate #88412—David Moretti.

I picked up the screen and tapped to open the brief official transcript of his mandatory bi-monthly psychological evaluation and classification review.

“Inmate Moretti continues to exhibit severe isolation tendencies, refusing to interact with general population units due to ongoing security concerns stemming from former syndicate associations. Subject frequently experiences severe paranoid episodes, repeatedly muttering about digital surveillance, compromised security feeds, and corporate betrayal. Subject maintains zero external communication privileges, as all family members, including former associates and parents, have formally severed all legal and personal ties.”

I stared at the glowing words for a long, quiet moment.

There was no rush of triumph, no vindictive thrill, and no lingering pain. Just the quiet, hollow echo of a man who had possessed everything—power, loyalty, wealth, and a wife who genuinely loved him—and traded it all away for arrogance and deceit.

David had spent years convincing me that I was the insecure one, the fragile one, the one who couldn't survive without his protection. He had built an elaborate cage of lies, gaslighting, and manipulation, fully believing he held the key.

He just forgot one crucial rule of survival: never underestimate a woman who has stopped asking questions because she is already busy building her escape.

I locked the screen, placed the tablet face down on the mahogany table, and stood up to walk over to the massive glass window.

Down below, the city lights twinkled like a million brilliant diamonds against the velvet night sky. The sprawling metropolis moved in a relentless, beautiful rhythm—a world of endless possibilities, completely free, completely unburdened, and entirely under my control.
