Chapter 7 - THE ASHES OF DECEPTIONTwo weeks later, the penthouse apartment on the top floor of the Moretti Tower looked completely different.

Every piece of dark, oppressive mahogany furniture, every heavy velvet drape, and every single trace of David’s cold, intimidating aesthetic had been ripped out, thrown into industrial dumpsters, and replaced with bright, minimalist white marble, soft linen textures, and towering glass windows that let in the warm, golden afternoon sunlight.

I stood on the expansive private balcony, holding a glass of crisp, chilled champagne, watching the city skyline stretch out endlessly beneath my feet.

The news had broken across every major financial network three days ago: Moretti Enterprises Announces Major Leadership Restructuring; Claire Moretti Appointed Sole Chairperson and CEO. Wall Street was buzzing. The corporate world was whispering about the sudden, ruthless purge of the old guard and the mysterious disappearance of David Moretti from public life.

Nobody outside the inner syndicate knew the full, brutal truth. And nobody dared ask.

My phone chimed on the marble table inside. I walked over, picked it up, and saw a notification from Mr. Vance.

“All federal filings complete. Asset liquidation finalized. The property in Tuscany has been transferred to your independent trust. You have absolute ownership.”

A quiet, profound sense of peace washed over me—the kind of stillness I hadn't felt since before Elena ever stepped foot back into our lives, before the late-night calls, before the gaslighting, before the tiny security camera became my only salvation.

The elevator chime echoed softly behind me.

I didn't turn around immediately, expecting one of the estate managers or legal aides. But the heavy, measured footsteps stepping onto the marble floor belonged to someone else.

"You really tore the whole place down, didn't you?"

I turned my head.

Uncle Marco stood near the entrance of the balcony, dressed in a sharp, dark tailored suit, holding his own glass of amber whiskey. He looked around the bright, modern living room with a faint, appreciative smirk.

"The old decor was cluttered with bad memories and worse company," I replied evenly, taking a slow sip of my champagne. "Did you need something, Marco, or are you here to check if the new CEO is running the empire into the ground?"

Marco chuckled, a low, rumbling sound, and walked over to lean against the glass railing beside me, looking out over the sprawling city.

"I’ve been in this business for forty years, Claire," Marco said quietly, his tone uncharacteristically serious. "I’ve seen men killed over millions, empires fall over vanity, and syndicates crumble from internal rot. But I’ve never seen anyone dismantle a lifetime of mafia control with a single projector remote and a quiet smile."

He turned his head, locking his sharp, experienced eyes onto mine with genuine respect.

"David was a fool. He thought he was the smartest predator in the room, but he didn't realize he was sleeping with an apex hunter."

"He mistook my patience for weakness," I said softly, my gaze fixed on the horizon where the sun was beginning to dip below the skyscrapers, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber. "It’s a very common mistake among men who think power only comes with a gun."

Marco raised his glass in a silent toast. "To the new queen."

I clinked my glass against his, the crisp ring of crystal echoing cleanly through the open air.

"To business, Marco," I smiled.
