Chapter 10 - The Rose Garden Blooms Again

The afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the third-floor suite. The sterile smell of hospital antiseptic and lavender had finally been cleared out, replaced by the fresh autumn breeze streaming through the wide-open windows.
Lucas sat propped up against the pillows, holding Captain the stuffed bear in his thin arms. His color was better already—the flush of returning health had replaced the deathly pallor that had haunted his skin for three years.
Lorenzo pulled the bedside chair close, sitting down with a gentleness he hadn't shown anyone since the day Isabella died. He reached out and gently smoothed down the boy's dark curls.
"How are you feeling, buddy?" Lorenzo asked, his voice softening into something warm and human.
"My tummy doesn't hurt anymore, Daddy," Lucas whispered, flashing a small, hesitant smile. "And... and I think I want some pasta tonight. With lots of cheese."
Lorenzo let out a low, rumbling laugh—the first genuine laugh he had emitted in over a thousand days. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled green crayon drawing Lucas had made in his notebook weeks ago, smoothing it out against the nightstand.
"You'll get all the pasta you want, son," Lorenzo said, kissing the boy's forehead. "Tomorrow, we're going outside."
"Outside?" Lucas’s eyes widened with wonder. "To the garden?"
"To the garden," Lorenzo promised.

Down below, in the side courtyard, the withered rose bushes stood in the fading light. But as Lorenzo looked out the window, he noticed something incredible. Right at the base of the tangled, thorny vines, a single tiny green shoot was pushing its way up through the dark, rich soil—alive, resilient, and ready to bloom.
The fortress was no longer a tomb. It was a home again.
