Chapter 11 - The Secret Behind the Painting

The morning sun hit the iron gates of the Duca estate with a sharp, blinding glare. For the first time in three years, the heavy wooden front doors stood wide open, welcoming the autumn breeze rather than sealing out an invisible war.
Lorenzo stood on the third-floor balcony, his sleeves rolled up, watching Lucas take his first hesitant steps across the freshly scrubbed marble floor of the terrace. The boy’s legs shook slightly, but his grip on Captain the teddy bear was loose and relaxed. The dark circles under his eyes had faded, replaced by the warm, natural flush of a child returning to life.
"Careful, buddy," Lorenzo murmured, stepping close to steady the boy’s elbow without hovering too tightly.
"I'm not falling, Daddy!" Lucas giggled, a bright, chiming sound that chased away the last lingering ghosts of the antiseptic-scented years.
Just as Lorenzo smiled, a sharp knock echoed from the heavy oak doorway of the suite. Sal stepped onto the terrace, holding a heavy, dust-covered wooden box that he had pulled from behind the secret wall panels in Dr. Vance’s basement office.
"Boss," Sal said, his face grim. "We went through Vance’s personal safe down at the clinic. We found this hidden behind the drywall. It wasn't logged in any of the medical manifests."
Lorenzo knelt down, setting Lucas gently on a cushioned bench. He took the wooden box from Sal’s hands. The lid was secured with an antique brass latch, rusted shut by decades of neglect. With a sharp flick of his pocket knife, Lorenzo popped the latch open.

Inside lay a collection of yellowed legal documents, a bundle of old polaroid photographs, and a small, gold locket with an intricate engraving of a rising sun.
Lorenzo’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized the locket instantly. It belonged to Isabella. It was the necklace she had been wearing the morning she drove out to the country road—the morning her car exploded.
