Chapter 16 - The New Foundation

Three months later, the East Coast underworld looked entirely different.
The old syndicate families, fractured and leaderless after the simultaneous federal raids on Senator Vance’s network and Marcus Sterling’s shell corporations, officially surrendered their territories to Lorenzo Duca. But Lorenzo didn't expand his grip on the streets. Instead, he did something that shocked every capo from New York to Miami: he began dismantling the criminal empire piece by piece.
He converted the underground smuggling ports into legitimate shipping logistics hubs. He liquidated the illegal gambling rings and redirected the capital into pediatric medical research foundations, naming the primary facility The Isabella & Lucas Duca Medical Institute.
On a crisp December morning, the sun shone brightly over the newly restored Duca estate. The stone walls still stood tall, but the iron gates were no longer guarded by armed men with rifles slung low; instead, families, researchers, and doctors walked freely through the newly paved courtyards.
Lucas, now seven years old and running with the boundless energy of any normal boy, chased a soccer ball across the green lawn of the side garden.
Lorenzo stood on the front steps, watching him with a cup of black coffee in his hand. Maria walked up beside him, carrying a tray of fresh pastries.
"The inspectors from the state medical board are downstairs, Mr. Duca," Maria said with a warm smile. "They’re reviewing the final grant proposals for the children's wing."
"Let them in," Lorenzo replied smoothly. "And make sure they get the best table in the courtyard."
As Maria walked away, a familiar small hand slipped into Lorenzo’s large palm. He looked down. Lucas was standing beside him, wearing a bright blue jacket, holding Captain the teddy bear tightly under one arm—though Captain now had a neat, perfectly stitched shoulder patch made from a piece of his mother's old silk scarf.

"Daddy, can we go see the roses?" Lucas asked, pointing toward the garden.
Lorenzo smiled, squeezing his son’s small hand. "Lead the way, buddy."
