Chapter 4 - The Discovery Behind the Wall

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He thrust his hand into the dark opening, his fingers closing around a bundle of fabric. With a swift yank, he hauled it out onto the pristine white carpet.

It wasn't a rat. It wasn't a mechanical wire.

It was a small, crudely stitched leather pouch, bound tightly with heavy-duty black electrical tape. A thick, dark sludge was leaking from a puncture in the seam, staining the white wool fibers of the rug with a sickly, brownish-green stain.

The smell hit Lorenzo instantly—heavy, pungent, and entirely out of place in a modern fortress. It smelled like black market apothecary herbs, specifically conium and dried hemlock root, mixed with a synthetic solvent used in industrial paint thinners.

"What is this?" Lorenzo muttered, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

He pulled a folding knife from his pocket, sliced through the thick layers of electrical tape, and pried the leather pouch open. Inside lay a crushed plastic vial, a discarded syringe with a bent needle, and a folded piece of heavy cardstock paper.

With trembling fingers, Lorenzo unfolded the paper. Scrawled across it in hurried, disguised handwriting were numbers and chemical notations—formulas that Dr. Vance never included in the official medical charts. Next to the formulas was a signature that made Lorenzo’s blood run instantly cold.

Dr. Aris Vance.

Lorenzo stared at the paper as the pieces violently clicked together in his mind. Lucas wasn't dying of a degenerative genetic disorder. The best doctors in the world hadn't failed because the disease was incurable.

They were failing because Lucas was being systematically, slowly poisoned.

Every pill, every IV drip, every sterile compound brought up to this room by Dr. Vance’s handpicked nurses was laced with a micro-dose of a slow-acting neurotoxin designed to mimic total organ failure. It kept the boy on the absolute brink of death—just stable enough to keep Lorenzo paying millions in medical fees, but weak enough to ensure he would never leave this bed alive.

Why? Who had bought Vance off? Who stood to inherit the Duca empire if the bloodline ended tonight?

Before Lorenzo could trace the conspiracy, a soft groan came from the bed.

Lucas’s eyes fluttered open. The boy looked at his father, his lips cracked and pale, and whispered through dry lips: "Daddy... the man in the white coat gave me a sour pill today. I hid it in Captain’s blanket, but it fell out..."

Lorenzo looked across the room at the stuffed bear sitting on the pillow. The small tear in Captain's shoulder—the one Isabella had sewn before she died—was slightly damp.

The toddler, Leo, hadn't been pointing at dirt when he said stinky. He had smelled the chemical decay leaking through the floorboards from the sub-vent beneath the room. A two-year-old's nose, uncorrupted by years of city smog and tailored suits, had smelled what a dozen world-class physicians had deliberately ignored.

Lorenzo stood up. The grief in his chest vanished, instantly replaced by something far older, darker, and infinitely more lethal.
