Chapter 4 - The Collapse of a Lie

The courtroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Judge Miller banged his gavel three times, his face darkening with absolute authority. "Silence in this courtroom! Mr. Vance, sit down immediately."

Gary collapsed back into his chair, trembling, sweating profusely as his lawyer frantically began packing up his briefcase, distancing himself from his client in real-time.

The Morty attorney stepped forward, placing a sleek flash drive and certified bank records onto the judge's desk. "Your Honor, enclosed are unassailable financial audits proving the petitioner's insolvency and fraudulent claims. Additionally, we have submitted permanent proof of Sarah Bennett’s new, secure employment with a comprehensive compensation package that exceeds the petitioner’s annual income tenfold."

Judge Miller opened the folder, his eyes scanning the certified documents. The numbers were staggering. A private wealth trust, fully funded, designated for Lily Bennett’s education and housing.

"Ms. Bennett," Judge Miller said, looking over his reading glasses at Sarah with a completely new expression of respect. "Is this employment verification accurate?"

Sarah stood up, her posture straight, her voice clear and unwavering for the first time in years. "Yes, Your Honor. I am the executive director of private child care and household management for Julian Morty."

At the mention of Julian Morty's name, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the courtroom. Even Judge Miller swallowed hard, recognizing the name that commanded the entire underworld and legitimate corporate empire of Chicago. No one questioned Julian Morty. No one dared.
