Chapter 3 - The Courthouse Ambush

The courtroom was freezing, exactly as it had been two days ago, but the energy in the room had shifted entirely.

Gary sat with his high-priced attorney, smiling smugly as they reviewed their notes. When Sarah walked through the double doors, she wasn't wearing her worn cleaning suit. She wore a sharp, tailored navy blazer, her hair neatly styled, flanked by three impeccably dressed corporate attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases bearing the letterhead of Morty & Sterling Legal Partners.

Gary’s smile evaporated. His lawyer adjusted his glasses, leaning over to whisper frantically into Gary's ear as the Morty legal team took their seats directly behind Sarah.

Judge Miller entered the chamber, looking tired and impatient. "We are here for the emergency custody modification hearing regarding the minor child, Lily Bennett," the judge announced, glancing at the docket. "Mr. Vance, representing the father, you may proceed."

Gary’s lawyer stood up, smoothing his tie with exaggerated confidence. "Your Honor, we maintain that the mother, Ms. Bennett, lacks the financial stability to provide a stable home environment. Her erratic work hours as a cleaner demonstrate a profound lack of parental availability—"

Before the lawyer could finish, the lead attorney for Morty & Sterling stood up, buttoning his jacket with cool precision.

"Objection, Your Honor," the attorney said, his voice echoing cleanly through the room. "We move to dismiss the petition based on fabricated financial metrics and malicious harassment by the petitioner."

Judge Miller blinked, looking down at the heavy stack of documents just placed on his desk by the Morty legal team. "Counsel, this is a standard custody dispute. On what grounds—?"

"On the grounds," the attorney interrupted smoothly, "that the petitioner, Gary Vance, has systematically embezzled funds from his employer over the past fourteen months to manufacture a false financial disparity, and furthermore, has falsified employment records submitted to this court."

Gasps echoed through the gallery. Gary turned chalk-white, shooting out of his chair. "That's a lie! Your Honor, she's lying!"
