Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the CourtyardOutside in the courtyard, the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory to tense and chaotic.

Guests whispered behind folded programs and champagne flutes. Rumors spread like wildfire through the crowd: The bride stormed out! The wedding is cancelled! The Don found out the truth!

Lucia Moretti sat quietly on a stone bench near the rose arches, holding little Emma’s small, warm hand. The three-year-old looked up at her grandmotherly figure with big, innocent gray eyes.

“Is the bad lady gone?” Emma asked softly.

Lucia offered a gentle, tired smile, stroking the child’s soft hair. “Yes, little one. The bad lady is gone. Because of you, the truth came out.”

A few yards away, Sophia Carter stood frozen near the catering tables, her hands trembling as she held an empty silver tray. Her heart hammered against her ribs. For two years, she had lived in silent terror of Isabella, swallowing every insult, hiding every bruise on her wrist, praying that no one would notice.

And now, the most feared man in the city—the mafia boss himself—had stood up for her and her daughter.

Heavy footsteps approached.

Sophia looked up. Alessandro Moretti stood before her. His black tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loose, and his face bore the heavy exhaustion of a man who had narrowly averted a catastrophic mistake.

“Sophia,” Alessandro said, his voice surprisingly soft.

“Mr... Mr. Moretti,” Sophia stammered, dipping her head respectfully. “I am so sorry for the disruption. Emma shouldn't have spoken out. I can pack my things and leave the estate immediately if—”

“Stop,” Alessandro interrupted, holding up a hand. He looked down at Emma, who was peering out from behind Lucia’s skirt with wide, curious eyes. Then he looked back at Sophia, his gaze steady and filled with profound respect. “You owe me no apologies, Sophia. In fact, I owe you and your daughter a debt I can never fully repay.”

Sophia blinked back sudden tears. “A debt, sir?”

“You kept my house running with grace while surrounded by a viper,” Alessandro said firmly. “And your daughter had more courage than every single man in my inner circle combined.”

He knelt down on one knee—for the second time that day—and looked directly at little Emma.

“Little one,” Alessandro said gently. “You saved me today. Is there anything in the world I can give you to say thank you?”

Emma tilted her head, considering the question deeply. Then, with absolute childish seriousness, she pointed a tiny finger at Alessandro’s lapel flower.

“Can I have the white rose?” she whispered.

A rare, genuine smile broke across Alessandro’s stern face. He carefully unpinned the pristine white rose from his jacket and placed it gently in her small palm.

“It’s yours,” he said softly.
