Chapter 2 - The Mask Cracks

The blue light of the tablet screen illuminated Detective Marcus Vance’s sharp features as the video file began to buffer. In the center of the lobby, the atmosphere felt suspended in amber. Victoria Sterling’s chest rose and fell in quick, shallow breaths, her posture rigid as a statue carved from ice.

"Detective, this is entirely unnecessary," Victoria snapped, stepping forward to swat at the tablet. Her composure was beginning to fray at the edges, the cracks showing through her thick foundation. "If you insist on airing a private security feed for the amusement of these vultures, do it in a private office. You are humiliating me!"

"You didn't seem worried about humiliation when you were screaming 'thief' at a nineteen-year-old girl in front of sixty witnesses," Marcus replied evenly, stepping out of her reach. He didn't lower the screen. Instead, he hit play, turning the device so the entire crowd could see.

The high-definition footage snapped into sharp, crystal-clear focus.

The timestamp in the corner read twenty minutes prior. The camera angle captured the exact corner of the lobby where Maya stood holding a velvet display folder. On screen, Maya’s movements were hesitant, respectful, and entirely professional. Then, Victoria Sterling entered the frame, gliding across the marble like a predatory cat.

As the video rolled, the audio began to play through the tablet's tiny speakers.

“You’re going to help me with a little insurance problem today, aren’t you, sweetie?” Victoria’s recorded voice echoed clearly across the silent lobby.

On the screen, Victoria was seen slipping a heavy, sparkling object out of her own designer handbag—not from the display case—and intentionally dropping it into the front pocket of Maya’s oversized service jacket while pretending to adjust her collar.

A collective wave of gasps and murmurs erupted from the elite crowd. Necks craned forward. Whispers bounced off the marble pillars like ricocheting bullets.

Maya stared at the screen, her eyes wide with total disbelief. The tears that had welled up earlier spilled over, tracking hot paths down her pale cheeks. "You... you planted it on me?" she whispered, staring directly at the older woman. "You did this on purpose?"

"Shut up! That's a deepfake! It's altered!" Victoria shrieked, her voice losing its polished, aristocratic timbre and snapping into a desperate, feral screech. She lunged forward, her long fingernails clawing at the air like a cornered animal. "It's a digital manipulation! Someone hacked the hotel servers! Arrest him! Arrest her!"

Marcus didn't flinch. He sidestepped her frantic lunge with effortless grace, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying calm.

"Mrs. Sterling, these servers are federally encrypted with blockchain verification timestamps," Marcus said, his voice cutting through her hysterical rant like a guillotine. "There is no editing this. There is no faking this. What we are watching is happening in real-time history."

Victoria stumbled back, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floor as she realized the inescapable trap closing around her neck.
