Chapter 4 - Ashes of the Empire

Within twenty-four hours, the digital footprint of Victoria Sterling’s downfall had consumed every major news outlet and social media platform in the country. The video from the hotel lobby—now dubbed by internet sleuths as "The Ultimate Boss Move"—racked up over fifty million views overnight.

In a quiet, sunlit corner of a downtown café, Maya sat stirring a cup of chamomile tea. The heavy wool jacket she had worn on the day of the incident was draped over the back of her chair—the very pocket where the diamond pendant had been planted was now empty, held securely in a police evidence locker downtown.

The bell above the café door chimed, and Detective Marcus Vance walked in, wearing civilian clothes—a simple dark jacket and jeans. He scanned the room, spotted her, and walked over, sliding into the booth opposite her.

"How is the wrist?" Marcus asked gently, nodding toward her arm where a faint pink shadow still lingered from Victoria’s cruel grip.

"Sore, but healing," Maya smiled softly, stirring her tea. "The hotel management sent a formal apology this morning. Along with a promotion to Director of Guest Relations and a scholarship endowment covering the rest of my university tuition."

Marcus chuckled, leaning back against the plush leather seating. "Well, corporate didn't have much of a choice. When your stock drops thirty percent in a single trading day because your executive board is linked to insurance fraud, you tend to make things right with the innocent victims very quickly."

"And Victoria?" Maya asked, her eyes searching his face.

"Arraigned this morning bail denied," Marcus said, his expression turning serious. "The federal prosecutors found a trail of past frame-ups and falsified insurance claims stretching back five years. She’s looking at a minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. Her high-society friends have already scrubbed her name from every foundation directory in the city. She doesn't exist anymore."

Maya let out a long, slow breath, feeling a massive weight lift off her shoulders. The nightmare was over. The predator had been outmatched.

"Thank you, Detective," Maya said, looking him straight in the eyes with quiet sincerity. "If you hadn't checked that camera feed..."

May you like

"I didn't just check the feed, Maya," Marcus interrupted with a mysterious, knowing smirk. "I knew what Victoria Sterling was doing long before she walked into that lobby."

Maya froze, her spoon halfway to her cup. "What do you mean?"
