Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Behind the Shield

Maya stared across the table, her mind racing to connect the dots. "What do you mean you knew? You acted like you just responded to a routine dispatch call."
Marcus took a slow sip of his black coffee, looking out the large glass window at the bustling city street outside. The morning sun caught the sharp angles of his jawline.
"Routine calls don't bring federal cyber-investigators to a five-star hotel lobby on a Tuesday morning," Marcus said, a faint, cryptic smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He set his cup down and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Three weeks ago, my division received an anonymous whistleblower tip detailing a systematic insurance fraud ring operating within the Sterling Foundation. The tipster provided specific account numbers, shell company names, and a detailed behavioral profile of Victoria Sterling's MO."
"An anonymous tip?" Maya repeated, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Who would know all of that?"
"Someone who worked inside her inner circle," Marcus replied smoothly. "Someone she thought she had successfully silenced and fired six months ago for asking too many questions about missing charity funds."
Maya’s jaw dropped slightly. "You mean... someone else she framed before me?"
"Exactly," Marcus nodded. "When Victoria targeted you to execute her latest fake theft claim, she didn't realize that our surveillance net was already completely woven around her. I was stationed just two blocks away when her assistant panicked and tipped us off that she was staging a confrontation in the lobby to secure an emergency payout before the board meeting."
"So... I wasn't just a random victim," Maya whispered, the realization washing over her like a warm tide. "I was the bait in your trap."
"You were the catalyst," Marcus corrected gently, his eyes softening as he looked at her. "You had the courage to stand your ground and not let her break you. Most people would have folded under her pressure, signed a false confession out of fear, and walked away destroyed. But you didn't. You held the line long enough for the trap to snap shut."
Maya felt a rush of pride wash through her. The fear, the tears, and the public humiliation suddenly felt like a distant battlefield she had successfully survived.
"So what happens now?" Maya asked, leaning forward, her eyes bright with a new, fierce energy. "Is the investigation completely over?"
May you like
"Not even close," Marcus said, his expression hardening as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick manila folder, placing it gently on the table between them. "Victoria was just the front-man. Or rather, the front-woman. There are higher-ups involved in this syndicate. People who think they are untouchable."
He slid the folder across the table toward her. Maya looked down at it, her fingers hovering over the crisp paper.
