Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit Unravels

Panic is an ugly thing when it strips away millions of dollars of camouflage. Victoria Sterling, a woman accustomed to buying her way out of parking tickets, scandals, and corporate fraud, found herself utterly naked in front of the very society she had manipulated for decades.
"You don't understand," Victoria stammered, her voice pitching upward into a frantic, trembling whine as she looked around the circle of elite faces. Faces that were now turning away, physically distancing themselves from her as if she carried a plague. "The insurance payout... the fund was short this quarter. The board was breathing down my neck. I just needed a quick claim to cover the deficit! It was a victimless crime!"
The crowd recoiled. Several prominent board members gasped audibly.
"A victimless crime?" Maya stepped forward, her initial fear completely replaced by a cold, burning fury that straightened her spine and dried her tears. She looked at the woman who had tried to ruin her life for a corporate balance sheet. "You called me a thief. You tried to send me to prison. You wanted to destroy my future, my record, my entire life just to save your own miserable skin!"
"Keep your voice down, you insolent little rat," Victoria snarled instinctively, her mask of civility completely obliterated. She raised her hand as if to strike Maya across the face.
Before her hand could complete the arc, Detective Vance’s grip locked around Victoria’s wrist with iron-clad authority. The sound of her silver bracelets clinking together was the death knell of her empire.
"Assaulting an officer in the line of duty, attempted framing, insurance fraud, and malicious public slander," Marcus recited calmly, pulling a pair of cold, steel handcuffs from his belt. "Mrs. Sterling, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"You can't do this to me! Do you know who my husband is? Do you know who my father is?" Victoria screamed, thrashing wildly as the cold metal cuffs clicked into place around her wrists, biting into her soft, pampered skin.

"Your husband filed for corporate separation three days ago, and your father’s estate was frozen by the SEC this morning," Marcus whispered into her ear, his voice a low, chilling whisper meant only for her. "You’re entirely alone, Victoria."
As the heavy doors parted to reveal two backup officers waiting outside with a patrol car, the flashbulbs of hidden paparazzi began to pop through the glass doors. The ultimate boss move of the year had been executed, not with violence, but with undeniable, inescapable truth.
