Chapter 10 - The Throne of GlassThe sun rose over Manhattan, casting a brilliant, blinding golden light across the glass facade of Vale Tower.

From the 42nd floor, I stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a cup of black coffee, looking out over a city that moved entirely at my command.

On my desk, the encrypted terminal blinked green.

GLOBAL ASSET LIQUIDATION COMPLETE.

VALE DOMINION MARKET SHARE: 48.2%.

ALL SUBSIDIARIES SECURED.

My phone vibrated softly on the glass surface.

It was a standard administrative notification from the federal prison system in upstate New York.

INMATE 849-202X (ASHFORD, N.) HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO PERMANENT SOLITARY CONFINEMENT FOLLOWING MULTIPLE ALTERCATIONS.

I glanced at the screen, swiped the notification away without opening it, and took a calm, steady sip of my coffee.

Nathan Ashford had spent years trying to erase my identity, believing that a woman without money, without status, and without protection was nothing more than a servant to his ambition.

He had taught me the most valuable lesson a person could ever learn.

Never tell a man how powerful your family is.

Let him believe he holds all the cards. Let him swing the whip. Let him think he has won.
