Chapter 6 - The Verdict and the VoidThe jury deliberated for precisely forty-two minutes.

When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the tension in the courtroom was thick enough to cut with a knife.

"On Count One: Racketeering and Organized Financial Fraud... how do you find the defendant, Nathan Ashford?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

"On Count Two: Grand Larceny and Systematic Corporate Embezzlement... how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice and Intimidation... how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty."

Across all twenty-four felony counts, the verdict was the same.

Guilty.

Celeste Monroe, tried concurrently under federal co-conspirator statutes, received an identical sweep of guilty verdicts.

When Judge Sterling banged his gavel to announce the sentencing hearing date—with mandatory federal guidelines pointing toward a minimum of thirty-five years without parole—Nathan did not scream. He did not protest. He simply slumped forward in his chair, his head resting against the mahogany table as federal marshals stepped up on either side of him.

As they lifted him to his feet to lead him back to the holding cells, Nathan raised his head one last time.

He looked at me across the aisle.

"Who..." his lips trembled, forming the words without sound. "Who are you?"

I didn't answer him with words.

I simply reached down, touched the silver band on my finger, and turned my back on him.
