Chapter 2 - Blood in the BoardroomThe Fairfax Shipping headquarters occupied the top three floors of a gleaming glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago. At midnight, the building was supposed to be a sanctuary of corporate wealth and elite security.

Instead, it became a slaughterhouse of secrets.
The private elevator chime pinged softly, and the doors slid open to reveal Kyle Varelli flanked by four armed enforcers in tailored charcoal suits. They didn't knock. They didn't announce themselves. They simply dismantled the private security desk in less than thirty seconds, sweeping through the executive suite like a localized hurricane.
Inside his expansive corner office, Richard Fairfax was pouring himself a glass of expensive bourbon, celebrating what he believed was the ultimate financial triumph. The merger was signed. The Varelli protection was secured. His daughter was someone else's problem.
The heavy oak doors of his office violently smashed open, splintering against the interior walls.
Richard nearly dropped his crystal glass, spinning around with a furious scowl. "What the hell is the meaning of this? Who authorized—" The words died in his throat as he saw who stepped through the threshold.
Kyle Varelli walked in slowly, rolling up his cuffs. Behind him, two guards dragged Richard’s head of security, throwing the bruised and bleeding man onto the pristine white Italian marble floor like a sack of garbage.
"Richard," Kyle said, his voice dripping with a lethal, terrifying sweetness. "I hope I'm not interrupting your post-wedding relaxation."
"Kyle?" Richard stammered, stepping backward until his lower back hit the edge of his mahogany desk. His face drained of color. "What is the meaning of this? Why are your men—how dare you storm my building? Where is Olivia?"
Kyle didn't answer right away. He walked over to the mahogany desk, picked up Richard's crystal glass of bourbon, sniffed it, and casually poured the amber liquid onto the expensive wool rug.
"Olivia is safe," Kyle said softly. "For the first time in her life, she is completely, wonderfully safe. Which is more than I can say for you."
"You arrogant little—" Richard puffed up his chest, relying on his decades of corporate intimidation and social status. "I am Richard Fairfax! I built this empire! I handed you my daughter on a silver platter to seal our partnership! You cannot touch me—"
Bang.
Kyle's fist connected directly with Richard's jaw with the force of a speeding truck. The older man spun backward, smashing into a glass display case and shattering it into a million glittering pieces before collapsing onto the floor, clutching his bleeding mouth.
"You traded her," Kyle whispered, towering over the groaning man and crouching down to grab him by the silk tie, hauling him up to eye level. "You sold her to me like cattle, and before you handed her over, you beat her until her skin turned black and blue. Because she hesitated to sign her life away to a monster."
Richard gasped for air, spitting a mixture of blood and broken teeth onto the floor. "She... she was ungrateful... disobedient... she needed to learn her place—"
"And now you're going to learn yours," Kyle interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying register that sent chills through every guard in the room.

Kyle stood up, wiping his knuckles with a silk handkerchief. He looked down at his father-in-law with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"From this exact moment," Kyle declared, his voice echoing in the dead-silent office, "the Fairfax shipping empire belongs to the Varelli family. Every ship, every warehouse, every cent. And you, Richard? You are going to sign over every single asset you own, or I am going to feed you piece by piece to the Chicago River. Choose quickly."
