Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the PastBack at the Varelli estate, Olivia sat curled up in a massive velvet armchair in the master suite. She was still wearing her wedding dress—or rather, the ruins of it. She had tried to scrub the makeup off her collarbone, but the fading purple marks remained stubborn reminders of the hell she had just escaped.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and footsteps echoed across the floor.
Olivia flinched, clutching a throw blanket tightly to her chest. When she saw Kyle walk in, her breath hitched. His knuckles were raw and bleeding again, a fresh smear of dark blood staining his crisp white shirt cuff.
"Kyle..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "Did you... what did you do?"
Kyle stopped, noticing the sheer panic in her eyes. He immediately let out a long breath, unbuttoning his blood-stained cuffs and tossing his suit jacket onto a nearby sofa. He didn't want her looking at his hands and seeing violence; he wanted her to see protection.
"It’s over, Olivia," Kyle said gently, walking toward her with a deliberate, unthreatening pace. He knelt down in front of her chair, keeping his hands resting safely on his own knees. "Your father has signed over complete control of his company to the Varelli estate. He will never, ever lay a hand on you again. You are free."
Olivia stared at him, her blue eyes wide with disbelief. "Free? People like my father... men like him don't just lose everything. He'll fight back. He'll ruin you—"
"Let him try," Kyle interrupted, a dark, dangerous smirk playing on the corner of his lips. "Let him try to fight a war against a man who owns half of Chicago's police force and all of its shadows. Richard Fairfax is finished. His power died the moment he raised a hand against my wife."
My wife.
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with a new kind of meaning. They weren't just business partners in an arranged alliance anymore. Something fundamental had shifted in the dark architecture of their marriage.
Olivia looked down at her lap, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. "Why? We just met. It was supposed to be a cold business arrangement. Why go to war for someone you don't even know?"
Kyle reached out slowly, giving her ample time to pull away if she wanted to. When she didn't, his warm thumb gently brushed against her cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear.
May you like
"Because nobody hurts what is mine," Kyle murmured, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart race. "And because from the moment I lifted that veil and saw terror in your eyes instead of boredom, I knew I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone make you look like that ever again."
Olivia’s breath caught. For the first time in her life, the name Varelli didn't sound like a cage. It sounded like an iron fortress built solely to keep her safe.
