Chapter 7 - The Final ReckoningThe war for Chicago's underworld was over before the sun even rose.

In less than twenty-four hours, Kyle Varelli had dismantled a corporate tyrant, crushed a syndicate rebellion, and cemented his absolute dominance over the entire city. But as his black sedan pulled through the iron gates of the Varelli estate at three in the morning, his mind wasn't on ports, territory, or blood.
It was on Olivia.
He walked quietly through the grand front doors, shedding his blood-speckled coat in the hallway, and climbed the sweeping staircase to the master suite. He expected her to be asleep, exhausted from the emotional turmoil of the past two days.
Instead, the bedroom door was cracked open, and a warm strip of light spilled across the hardwood floor.
Kyle pushed the door open softly.
Olivia was sitting up in the center of the massive bed, wrapped in a soft silk robe. She wasn't sleeping. Her blue eyes were fixed on the door, wide, watchful, and filled with a quiet anxiety that vanished the moment she saw him.
"You're bleeding," she whispered immediately, her eyes dropping to a fresh cut across Kyle's cheekbone.
Kyle touched his cheek, letting out a soft, low sigh. He walked over to the bed, sat down on the edge, and looked at her. For the first time all night, the cold, lethal mask of the mafia boss melted away completely.
"It's nothing," Kyle said softly. "Just a scratch."
"Did they... did they try to hurt you?" Olivia asked, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out with a hesitant hand, her fingertips gently brushing against the fresh cut on his face.
The touch was feather-light, filled with a tender, genuine care that caught Kyle completely off guard. He caught her hand in his, pressing his palm against her warm cheek.
"They tried," Kyle murmured, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at her. "They thought I was weak because I cared about you. They thought loving you made me vulnerable."
Olivia’s breath hitched. Her blue eyes searched his face, swimming with unshed tears. "And... does it?"
Kyle leaned in closer, his forehead resting gently against hers.
"It makes me invincible," he whispered fiercely. "Olivia Fairfax... Olivia Varelli. You are not my weakness. You are my entire world."

Olivia let out a shaky, emotional breath, a radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time in her life—a smile that wasn't forced, wasn't hiding fear, and wasn't wearing a mask.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him close, and for the first time since the wedding vows were spoken, the terrifying arrangement became something entirely real, forged in fire, blood, and an unbreakable love.
