Chapter 5 - The Velvet CageBack at the Varelli estate, Olivia woke up to sunlight streaming through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. For a fleeting second, she thought the terrifying wedding, the confession in the office, and the violent rescue were all part of a fever dream.

Then she turned her head and saw Kyle sitting across the room in a plush leather armchair, a steaming cup of black coffee in one hand and a thick dossier of corporate documents in the other.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt was open at the collar, revealing the clean, sharp lines of his throat and chest. He looked like a king guarding his treasury.
"You're awake," Kyle said, his deep voice cutting through the quiet morning air without startling her.
Olivia pulled the silk sheet higher around her shoulders, feeling suddenly vulnerable despite wearing a modest silk nightgown. "How long have you been sitting there?"
"Long enough," Kyle replied, setting his coffee down and standing up. He walked over to the bed, his movements fluid and unhurried. "How are you feeling?"
"I... I'm okay," Olivia whispered, testing the words as if she wasn't sure if they were true. "My shoulder is a bit sore, but... the nightmare is gone, isn't it? My father can't hurt me anymore."
"Your father is currently recovering in a secure medical facility under twenty-four-hour guard," Kyle said flatly, his expression cold. "He will never set foot in his office again. He will never touch you, speak to you, or look at you again. You are entirely under my protection."
Olivia looked up at him, her blue eyes searching his face. "Why are you doing this, Kyle? I know what people say about you. They call you a monster. A ruthless criminal who rules the underworld with an iron fist. But to me... you've only been..."
"A monster?" Kyle finished for her with a faint, cynical smile. He sat down on the edge of the mattress, the bed dipping under his weight. He reached out and gently traced the line of her jawline with his thumb. "They aren't wrong, Olivia. I have done things in the shadows of this city that would make your blood run cold. I break rules, I break bones, and I break empires."
He leaned in closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, burning intensity.
"But a monster only destroys what is weak," Kyle whispered, his voice vibrating with a quiet, dangerous authority. "You are not weak. You survived a monster for twenty years. That makes you the strongest person in this room. And anyone who tries to hurt you will learn why they call me the most dangerous man in Chicago."
Olivia's heart pounded against her ribs, not out of fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming rush of warmth. For the first time in her life, she felt protected. She felt cherished.
And then, a sharp, urgent knock at the heavy bedroom door shattered the fragile intimacy.
Kyle's expression hardened instantly, the tender husband vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced once more by the ruthless mafia boss.
"Enter," Kyle commanded.
The door swung open, and Leo, Kyle's most trusted enforcer, stepped into the room, his face grim.
"Boss," Leo said, casting a quick, respectful glance toward Olivia before looking back at Kyle. "We have a problem. Victor Rossi and Marcus Vance just mobilized their men. They’re moving on our northern shipping docks. They think you're distracted by family matters... and they're coming to take back what you just won."

Kyle slowly stood up from the bed, his jaw clenching as a cold, lethal fire ignited in his dark eyes.
"Get the cars ready," Kyle ordered softly. "It’s time to teach Chicago a lesson it will never forget."
