Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Smoke

The fires in the Chicago harbor had barely cooled when the federal subpoenas arrived on the polished mahogany desk of the Orsini-Hartley executive suite. Marcus Thorne was locked inside a maximum-security medical wing, but his network—a sprawling hydra of corrupt judges, shipping conglomerates, and shell corporations—was thrashing in its death throes.

Josephine stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, reviewing the digital seizure notices. Her reflection in the glass showed a woman who no longer resembled the timid maid who had once cowered behind a crooked brass name pin.

“They’re attempting to block our acquisition of the Marseille shipping lanes,” Josephine said without turning around.

Raphael walked up behind her, setting a cup of black coffee on the marble counter. He wrapped his arms gently around her waist, resting his chin against her shoulder. “Let them try. Thorne’s legal team is a house of cards built on forged signatures and bribes. We don’t just dismantle them in court, Josephine. We buy their debt and foreclose on their offices by noon.”

A rare, sharp smile crossed her face. “You’re becoming ruthless, Mr. Orsini.”

“I learned from the best strategist in North America,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her temple.

The intercom buzzed sharply. Gideon Marsh’s voice broke the quiet intimacy of the morning. “Boss. You’ve got an unannounced guest in the private lobby. Says her name is Elena Vance—Victor’s younger sister. And she isn't carrying a subpoena. She’s carrying a blood debt.”
