Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning

“Kill them both!” Thorne roared, diving behind the concrete pillar for cover as bullets began to chew through the concrete pillars.
Raphael didn't hesitate. He drew his Sig Sauer from his coat holster, firing two rapid, precision shots that neutralized the two guards flanking Thorne before they could even raise their sights.
Up on a concrete retaining wall, Josephine vaulted over a parked SUV, landing silently behind the final mercenary. Before the man could spin around, she swept his legs out from under him and delivered a decisive strike to his temple, knocking him cold.
Thorne scrambled across the floor, desperately grabbing the dropped rifle of his fallen guard. He spun around, aiming directly at Raphael, who was striding toward him with steady, unyielding steps.
“It ends here, Raphael!” Thorne screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Before Thorne could fire, a sharp metallic thwack echoed through the bay.
Josephine had hurled a heavy tactical throwing knife with pinpoint accuracy. The blade buried itself deep into the meat of Thorne’s right shoulder, forcing him to shriek in agony and drop the weapon as it clattered uselessly against the concrete.
Raphael closed the distance in two long strides, grabbing Thorne by the collar of his expensive cashmere coat and slamming him violently against the concrete pillar inches away from the strapped security guard.
“You lost, Thorne,” Raphael whispered, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against the center of Thorne’s forehead.
Thorne spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, laughing hysterically even as the barrel pressed into his skin. “You think... you think killing me stops it? The syndicate is bigger than—aghh!”
Raphael didn't wait for him to finish. With a swift, brutal strike to the temple with the heavy butt of his pistol, Raphael knocked Thorne unconscious, sending him slumped heavily onto the concrete floor.
Within seconds, Gideon Marsh and a full tactical sweep team swarmed out of the emergency stairwells, securing the perimeter, cutting the timer off the terrified security guard, and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Thorne and his surviving men.
Silence rushed back into the underground garage, broken only by the hum of the ventilation fans.
Raphael stood over the unconscious syndicate boss for a long moment before turning around.
Josephine walked up beside him, wiping a streak of dust from her cheek. Her breathing was steady, her eyes fierce and unbroken. She looked down at the data drive still clutched safely in Raphael’s hand, then up at his face.
“You missed your calling as a tactical operative, Ms. Hartley,” Raphael murmured, a genuine, rare smile breaking across his hardened features.
“I had an excellent teacher, Mr. Orsini,” she replied softly, stepping closer to him.

The heavy clock in Raphael’s mind—the one that had marked every tragedy, every regret, and every midnight fear for over a decade—finally fell completely silent. They had walked through the fire, outsmarted the ghosts of their past, and forged an empire that no enemy could ever touch again.
Raphael reached out, gently taking her hand in his. Together, they turned their backs on the darkness of the sub-level and walked up toward the light of a brand-new dawn.
