Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Chicago High-Rise

Eighteen months later, the penthouse suite overlooking the glittering financial district of Chicago hummed with quiet, relentless power.

Josephine stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the morning traffic crawl like tiny ants far below. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit, her dark hair swept back into a polished knot. The timid maid who once apologized to hallway corners was entirely gone, replaced by the razor-sharp strategist who now managed the global acquisitions of the newly restructured Orsini-Hartley Global Enterprises.

Behind her, the heavy double doors opened, and Raphael walked in carrying two cups of black coffee. He set one on the marble island and leaned against the counter, watching her with quiet admiration.

“The European shipping board confirmed the dock acquisitions in Rotterdam,” Raphael said, handing her the mug. “They want to meet in Zurich next week to finalize the maritime security contracts.”

Josephine took a sip of the dark roast, a faint, confident smirk playing on her lips. “Tell them I’ll review the terms myself. If the Italian syndicates think they can muscle in on our Mediterranean routes just because Vance is gone, they’ve severely miscalculated who’s running the board now.”

Raphael chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Sometimes I forget you used to apologize to my desk chair.”

“People evolve, Mr. Orsini,” she replied playfully, turning away from the window to face him.

Their peaceful domesticity, however, was violently interrupted by the sharp buzz of the secure intercom on the kitchen wall.

Gideon Marsh’s gravelly voice crackled through the speaker. “Boss. You need to look at the primary security monitors in the garage right now.”

Raphael’s expression hardened instantly. He strode over to the master console, punching in a rapid sequence of override codes. On the high-definition screen displaying the private underground parking bay, an unmarked black courier van had just cut across the lane, blocking the exit path of their armored town car.

The back doors of the van swung open. Two men in black tactical gear didn't step out to deliver a package—they stepped out dragging a bound, gagged figure wearing an Orsini security uniform.

Pinned to the security guard's chest was a heavy, ticking brass pocket watch—set permanently to 12:43.
