Chapter 2 - Shadows in the CorridorThe clock on the wall of the nurses' station read 11:45 PM. The hospital was quiet, save for the occasional chime of a call bell or the distant squeak of a food cart wheels down the linoleum floor.

Rachel sat at the central desk, her eyes burning as she typed up her shift notes. Her mind, however, was miles away. The conversation with Caleb Rossi kept replaying in her head. There was something magnetic, terrifyingly charismatic about him that defied everything she had been taught to expect from the city's underworld figures.

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then, they plunged into a deep, amber emergency glow.

Rachel stood up instantly. Power outages in Harbor Mercy were rare; the backup generators usually kicked in within milliseconds. But tonight, the entire fourth floor remained shrouded in the dim, humming amber light.

"Sarah?" Rachel called out, looking down the corridor toward the supply room.

There was no answer.

The heavy silence of the floor felt oppressive. Rachel reached for the flashlight on her belt, her thumb clicking it on. The sharp beam cut through the shadows, illuminating the polished floorboards.

As she rounded the corner toward Room 412, her blood ran cold.

The two armed guards who were supposed to be stationed outside Caleb's door were gone.

In their place, three men in dark, tactical gear stood motionless in the shadows. They weren't hospital security. Their clothing bore no insignia, and their faces were half-obscured by matte-black balaclavas. One of them held a silenced pistol, the barrel pointed downward.

Rachel froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She backed slowly toward the recessed wall, trying to reach the emergency panic button behind the pillar.

"Going somewhere, Nurse?" a cold voice whispered from behind her.

A heavy hand clamped over her mouth, cutting off her scream, while another arm wrapped around her waist like a steel band, hoisting her off her feet and dragging her backward into an empty patient room.

The door clicked shut behind them.

Rachel thrashed wildly, her elbows driving backward into her attacker's ribs. The man grunted, losing his grip just enough for Rachel to twist around and sink her teeth into the meat of his thumb.

"Damn it!" the intruder hissed, releasing her.

Rachel stumbled back, gasping for air, her hand flying to her pocket for her heavy medical shears. But before she could pull them out, the man stepped forward, the beam of his tactical flashlight catching his face. It wasn't one of Caleb's men. It was a stranger, his eyes cold and dead.

"Quiet down, sweetheart," the intruder snarled, raising his weapon. "We didn't come here for you. We came for the man in 412. You’re just going to help us get past his little welcoming committee."

"I won't help you with anything," Rachel spat, her voice trembling with adrenaline rather than fear.

The intruder chuckled darkly, stepping closer. "You don't have a choice. Either you walk us into that room and turn off the patient's heart monitor, or—"

Click.

The sound was sharp, metallic, and undeniable.

The intruder stopped mid-sentence. From the shadows of the darkened hospital room, a tall figure emerged, moving with a terrifying, predator-like stealth.

It was Enzo Moretti.

The giant enforcer stood with a heavy-gauge shotgun leveled squarely at the intruder's chest. A vicious, dark smile twisted the scar running down his temple.

"Or what?" Enzo whispered, his voice like grinding stones. "Finish your sentence, friend. I’d love to hear how this ends."
