Chapter 8 - The SafehouseForty-eight hours later, Rachel sat in a leather armchair inside an underground medical bunker located beneath a seemingly abandoned grain silo sixty miles outside of Chicago.

The bunker was state-of-the-art—equipped with surgical suites, advanced life support monitors, and a rotating team of elite doctors who answered only to Caleb Rossi.

Caleb lay on a medical bed in the center of the room, an IV line hooked to his arm, looking remarkably composed given that he had been poisoned two days prior. The antidote Rachel administered in the car had saved his life before the neurotoxin could reach his brain stem.

The door slid open, and Enzo walked in, placing a heavy manila folder on the side table.

"Vance is gone," Enzo said bluntly.

Caleb didn't look up from his book. "Gone where?"

"His primary warehouses are ash. His shipping terminals are seized by our associates. And Vance himself caught a flight to South America about three hours ago with half a million dollars and no army left. He won't be back."

Caleb closed the book slowly. He looked over at Rachel, who was sitting quietly in the corner, staring blankly at the sterile white wall.

"You saved me again," Caleb said, his voice soft.

Rachel turned her head slowly to look at him. There was no anger left in her eyes—only a cold, hollow realization.

"I saved a human life," Rachel said, her voice devoid of emotion. "That’s what I do. But I am done playing your nurse, Caleb. I am done living in bunkers, dodging hitmen, and watching your private army burn down the city."

Caleb sat up slowly, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. "You think you can just walk away now? After everything that’s happened?"

"I'm not asking for your permission," Rachel stood up, walking over to the heavy steel door of the bunker. "I'm telling you how it is. You're stable. You have a dozen doctors who can monitor your recovery. My shift is over."

She reached for the electronic keypad on the wall.

Before her fingers could touch the buttons, Enzo stepped silently in front of the door, his massive frame blocking her exit. He didn't draw a weapon, but his presence was an unmovable wall.

Rachel turned back to Caleb, her eyes blazing with cold fury. "Call your dog off, Rossi."

Caleb sighed, sliding off the bed. He winced slightly as his feet hit the floor, walking slowly across the room until he stood just a few feet away from her.

"I can't let you leave, Rachel," Caleb said quietly. "Not because I want to imprison you, but because Victor Vance wasn't the head of the snake. He was just the tail. The real power behind the attempt on my life is someone inside my own inner circle. Someone who knows every move I make."

Rachel frowned, her defensive posture faltering slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about a civil war," Caleb said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity. "And right now, you are the only person in this city I trust completely. If you walk out those doors alone, the traitors will use you to get to me. Or worse, they'll eliminate you to tie up loose ends."

He reached out, gently taking her hand. This time, Rachel didn't pull away.

"Stay with me, Rachel," Caleb whispered. "Not as my nurse. As my partner. Help me clean out the corruption rot in this city, and I swear to you—when this is over, you can walk away anywhere in the world you want, with all the power and protection you could ever dream of."
