Chapter 4 - The UltimatumDawn broke over Lake Michigan, casting a pale, bruised light across the Chicago skyline. The power had been restored an hour before shift change, and the hospital administration, thoroughly paid off or thoroughly terrified, acted as if nothing had happened. The blood in the hallway had been scrubbed clean, leaving no trace of the midnight execution.

Rachel sat in the corner of Room 412, her eyes bloodshot. She hadn't slept a wink.
Caleb Rossi sat propped up against the pillows, looking much stronger than he had the day before. The color had returned slightly to his cheeks, though his left arm remained immobile in a sling. He was eating a simple breakfast of oatmeal and black coffee brought in by his men, watching Rachel with intense curiosity.
"You're torturing yourself," Caleb said, setting his spoon down.
"I'm evaluating my options," Rachel replied flatly without looking up from her phone. She was staring at a rental listing three states away.
"Your options are limited, Rachel," Caleb said smoothly. "If you walk out of this hospital right now, the Outfit will hunt you down within twenty-four hours. Not because you did anything wrong, but because you know too much, and because you're the one person who managed to defy them by saving my life. To my enemies, you're a liability."
Rachel finally looked up, her eyes flashing with anger. "So what? Are you keeping me here as a prisoner?"
"I'm keeping you here as a guest," Caleb corrected gently. "Under my personal protection. My enemies don't touch what belongs to me."
"I don't belong to you!"
"You saved my life," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute authority. "In our world, that makes us bound. You keep me alive; I keep you breathing. It's a simple exchange."
Before Rachel could launch into a furious retort, the door burst open.
Dr. Harrison Brooks walked in, holding a clipboard. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Caleb sitting up and glaring at him, while Rachel looked ready to commit murder.
"Mr. Rossi," Brooks stammered, adjusting his glasses. "Your... your vitals look exceptional. The surgical team is amazed by your recovery rate."
"Tell them not to be too impressed," Caleb said, never breaking eye contact with Rachel. "They just stitched me up. Nurse Hayes did the real work."
Brooks nodded nervously, looking at Rachel. "Ah, yes. Nurse Hayes, the administrator is on the phone. They want you down in human resources immediately."
Rachel frowned. "Human resources? Why?"
"They are... updating your contract," Brooks said evasively, refusing to meet her eyes. "A permanent reassignment to executive patient care. Effective immediately. Your salary has been increased by five hundred percent, and your student loans have been paid in full."
Rachel froze. She stared at Brooks in disbelief. "What? I didn't ask for a transfer! I didn't ask for my loans to be paid!"
"Consider it a signing bonus," Caleb murmured, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
Rachel stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. She marched over to the bed, leaning down until her face was inches from Caleb's.
"You think you can buy me? You think because you control this hospital, you control my life?"
May you like
Caleb didn't flinch. He looked up at her, his gray eyes burning with an intense, terrifying fire.
"I don't want to buy you, Rachel," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I want to partner with you. Because in a city full of snakes, you're the only person who isn't afraid to bite back."
