Three weeks later, the headlines across every major news network shook the foundations of New York City.
Victor Costa and thirty-two of his top associates were arrested in a coordinated pre-dawn federal raid, brought down by an impenetrable mountain of financial corruption and racketeering evidence. The federal prosecutors offered full immunity to anyone who cooperated—effectively dismantling the syndicate within forty-eight hours.
My mother’s heart surgery was a complete success, funded by a legitimate, anonymous charitable trust that somehow managed to cover every single medical bill without a trace. She was currently recovering in a sunlit villa in the south of France, completely unaware that her daughter was now the most notorious—and well-protected—woman in the international underground.
As for me, I stood on the balcony of a secluded cliffside villa overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean, the warm sea breeze tangling in my hair.
