Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Brownstone

"They tracked the satellite ping from the decryption terminal," Enzo’s voice crackled over the secure intercom from the ground floor. "Boss, they’ve surrounded the building. We're compromised."

Dominic didn't hesitate. He slammed the laptop shut, ripped the flash drive from the port, and shoved it into his pocket. He turned to me, his dark eyes burning with absolute intensity.

"Clara, listen to me. We’re moving to the escape tunnel in the basement. Stay behind me, keep your hand on my belt, and do not look back."

"What about Enzo?" I asked, my voice shaking.

"Enzo is holding the rear stairwell," Dominic said grimly. "Now move!"

We burst out of the bedroom just as a deafening explosion rocked the front entrance of the brownstone. The heavy oak doors splintered into a million pieces as a smoke grenade sailed into the foyer, filling the hallway with thick, blinding white fog.

Gunfire erupted below. Bullets chipped the stone walls of the staircase as we descended toward the cellar. Dominic fired back with lethal precision, shielding my body with his own broad frame.

Suddenly, a massive figure in tactical gear rounded the landing above us, leveling an assault rifle straight at Dominic's back.

"Dominic! Look out!" I screamed.

Acting on pure, blind instinct, I raised the Sig Sauer pistol Dominic had given me at the hospital and pulled the trigger. The recoil nearly broke my wrist, but the bullet struck the assailant squarely in the shoulder, sending him tumbling backward down the stairs.

Dominic spun around, finished the gunman with a single shot to the chest, and grabbed my hand, pulling me the rest of the way down into the damp, stone-lined cellar.
