Chapter 13 - The Biological Cipher

The terrace seemed to tilt beneath my feet. The bright blue of the Mediterranean blurred into a sickening vortex of white and grey as Marcus’s words echoed in the open air.

Biological key.

"Explain," Dominic growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury.

“Oh, your bride doesn't know?” The voice on the other end feigned surprise, dripping with mocking amusement. “Arthur Vance wasn't just an accountant, Dominic. He was a geneticist before he lost his license and his mind to the underworld. Clara isn't just an ordinary girl who stumbled into a catering shift. She’s a living hard drive. Her father spliced a secondary cryptographic layer directly into her non-coding DNA sequences using a retroviral vector when she was an infant. The numbers on that paper were only the decryption password. To actually open the vault and access the offshore reserves, the system requires a live biometric sample containing her specific genetic marker.”

Dominic’s expression turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated menace. "If you come anywhere near her, I will personally hunt down every single remnant of your syndicate, peel the skin from your bones, and feed you to the sharks beneath this cliff."

“A lovely sentiment, Dominic. But you're looking at the sea while the tide is rising behind you. Check your perimeter monitors.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Dominic didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. He grabbed Enzo by the shoulder, spinning him around. "Sector four! Now! They're hitting the cove!"

Before Enzo could even raise his radio, a dull, concussive thud echoed from the base of the cliff beneath the villa. The ground trembled slightly under our feet as a plume of black smoke erupted from the private elevator shaft that connected the rocky beach to the clifftop estate.

"Intruders in the lower grotto!" an automated voice blared across the villa's emergency intercom system. "Biometric seals breached on sub-level two!"

Panic, sharp and blinding, clawed at my throat. I looked down at my hands, trembling against the stone balustrade. A living hard drive. My entire life—the double shifts at the diner, the freezing winters in Queens, the agonizing nights in the hospital—wasn't just a streak of bad luck. I had been engineered from birth to be a walking vault for stolen billions.

Dominic grabbed my arm, his grip firm, grounding me amidst the rising chaos. His eyes burned with an intense, protective fury that brooked no argument.

"Clara, look at me," he commanded, his voice steady despite the explosions echoing from below. "You are my wife. You are a Rossi. Nobody touches a hair on your head. Do you understand me?"

"Dominic, they're coming for me," I breathed, tears of sheer frustration and fear pricking my eyes. "I'm the key. I'm the target."

"Then we make them burn trying to reach the lock," Dominic snarled. He drew his Sig Sauer, handing a secondary submachine gun to Enzo, who had already transitioned into tactical mode with terrifying speed.

"Boss," Enzo said, his voice clipped and urgent as he checked the digital feed on his tactical tablet. "It’s not Costa’s remnants. It’s the Syndicate Vanguard. Marcus’s private black-ops division. They brought heavy ordinance. They’re blowing the secondary exit."
