Chapter 16 - The Voice in the Grate

Dominic’s head snapped upward toward the industrial steel grating set into the rock ceiling. In a single fluid motion, he drew his pistol, leveling it at the dark opening.

Enzo stepped beside him, his assault rifle raised, safety clicked off.

A low, mechanical laugh echoed through the metal ductwork—smooth, cultured, and undeniably chilling.

“Did you really think a fortress built by a retired shipping tycoon didn't have blueprints registered with the international black market, Dominic? I designed this grotto five years ago. I know every bolt, every wire, and every blind spot.”

"Marcus," Dominic spat, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "Show your face, you coward."

“Oh, I'm right above you, my dear boy. Or rather, my operatives are.”

Suddenly, a heavy, metallic scraping sound came from the ventilation shaft. Before Dominic could fire, a cylindrical canister dropped through a side grate, hitting the concrete floor with a hollow clatter and instantly erupting into a thick, milky-white cloud of dense chemical smoke.

"Gas! Mask on!" Dominic roared, lunging forward to yank a respirator from the tactical kit on the wall.

He shoved it over my face, strapping it tight just as the sweet, sickly scent of aerosolized paralytic began to cut through the air. But as I fought to pull air through the filter, strong hands grabbed me from behind.

I spun around with a gasp, but it wasn't Dominic.

Through the thick, roiling white fog, a tactical operative had dropped silently from a second maintenance hatch directly above the desk, bypassing the room's primary defenses entirely. Before Enzo could pivot his rifle, a high-voltage taser prongs struck him square in the chest. Enzo collapsed to the concrete with a heavy thud, his muscles spasming violently before going limp.

Dominic roared in fury, spinning around to fire, but three more operatives swarmed out of the smoke like phantoms, tackling him to the ground in a brutal, chaotic pile of limbs and tactical gear.

"Dominic!" I screamed, tearing at the straps of my respirator, but the paralytic gas was already seeping into my skin, turning my limbs into lead.

My knees buckled. I hit the cold concrete floor just as Dominic managed to break free of one assailant, his face bruised and bleeding, his eyes locked desperately onto mine through the haze.

"Clara..." he choked out, lunging toward me across the floor just as a heavy boot slammed down onto his chest, pinning him to the ground.

Through the blurring edges of my vision, I saw a man step out of the smoke. Impeccably dressed in a charcoal-grey suit that looked absurdly out of place in the blood-stained sea cave, he had silver hair brushed straight back and cold, calculating blue eyes that held an unmistakable glint of cruel triumph.

Marcus Vance.

He knelt beside me, his fingers gently lifting my chin, his gaze cold and clinical as he stared into my fading consciousness.

“Hello, my niece,” Marcus whispered softly, the last words I heard before the darkness swallowed me whole.
