Chapter 7 - The Cipher Revealed

The breakthrough came on the fifth morning, completely by accident.

I was sitting at the mahogany desk, going through a stack of old childhood books Dominic had retrieved from my apartment in Queens as a comfort gesture. As I flipped through the dog-eared pages of a worn copy of Robert Frost’s poetry, a scrap of paper slipped out from the binding.

It was covered in a grid of numbers and letters in my father's cramped, frantic handwriting.

Clara, I whispered, staring at the sequence.

Dominic, who was standing by the window reviewing a report from Enzo, instantly crossed the room. "What is it?"

"My dad's handwriting," I said, my heart pounding as I studied the sequence. "He used to read this book to me every night before bed when I was little. He always made me memorize the line numbers instead of page numbers."

I began reciting the verses from memory, cross-referencing them with the grid of numbers on the paper. Within ten minutes, the chaotic alphanumeric sequence transformed into a clean, 64-character encryption key.

Dominic’s breath hitched. He grabbed his laptop, plugged an encrypted flash drive into the port, and punched the key into the master decryption terminal.

The screen flickered, loading a massive database of financial records, offshore accounts, and recorded phone conversations between Victor Costa and corrupt federal officials.

"We have it," Dominic breathed, a triumphant, ruthless smile breaking across his face. "The entire archive."

Suddenly, the security monitor on the desk flared to life. The feed from the perimeter cameras showed three black SUVs pulling up outside the brownstone. Heavily armed men in tactical gear were pouring out of the vehicles, led by Victor Costa himself.

They had found us.
