Chapter 1 - THE DOSAGE OF DECEITThe heavy silk of Lorenzo’s suit jacket weighed heavily on my shoulders, smelling of expensive cedar and absolute authority. The cold October wind whipping across the Lake Forest estate felt like a splash of ice water against my face, slowly burning away the thick, cottony fog that had cushioned my brain for the past eight months.

"Look at me, Sophia," Lorenzo commanded softly. His voice didn't carry the petty cruelty of his nephew, but it held a terrifying gravity that made it impossible to disobey.

I raised my eyes to meet his. Up close, his irises were an impossible, piercing slate-gray, flecked with gold near the pupils.

"You didn't answer me," he said, his thumb lightly grazing my wrist as he checked my pulse. "What pills is Adrian giving you?"

"I... a thyroid medication," I stammered, the words tasting like ash. "Levothyroxine, he said. For my metabolism. He picks them up directly from Dr. Kessler’s clinic so I don't have to 'worry my head about administrative things,' as he puts it."

Lorenzo’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. The silver at his temples seemed to catch the pale moonlight, making him look less like a man and more like an ancient statue of vengeance.

"Dr. Kessler doesn't treat thyroid conditions, Sophia," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Kessler is a neuro-pharmacologist on my payroll. He specializes in bespoke chemical compliance. He writes prescriptions for memory suppression, compliance enhancement, and metabolic disruption."

The world tilted. The terrace balustrade beneath my hands suddenly felt like it was spinning.

"Compliance..." The word felt foreign on my tongue. "Why would Adrian want to...?"

"Because three years ago, before Adrian married you, your family signed over a controlling stake in Vanguard Logistics to you as a dowry," Lorenzo said, spelling out a nightmare I had never known existed. "Adrian tried to force you to sign it over to him on your first anniversary. You refused. So, with Kessler’s help, he engineered a slow-motion execution. He made you believe you were losing your mind, your beauty, and your health, so that when you finally signed the power of attorney out of sheer exhaustion, you wouldn't even realize you were handing him your executioner's sword."

My breath hitched. The pieces snapped together with horrifying precision—the weight gain caused by a drug designed to slow my thyroid to a crawl, the brain fog that made it impossible to read legal documents, the isolation.

"He's planning to sign the papers tonight," I breathed, the fog finally burning away completely, replaced by a cold, incandescent rage. "At the estate. After the dinner. He brought the notary."

Lorenzo stared at me for a long, silent moment. A slow, terrifying smile touched the corners of his mouth—not a smile of warmth, but the look of a predator who had just found a wolf in his sheepfold.

"Then let's not disappoint him," Lorenzo murmured, stepping closer. "Do you want your life back, Sophia?"

"I want to tear his world down to ash," I whispered back.

"Good," Lorenzo said, sliding his hand from my wrist to cup my cheek, his thumb brushing my lower lip. "Because I happen to own the match. And tonight, we burn him to the ground together."
