Chapter 8 - THE ECLIPSE OF THE MORETTISThe final remnants of Adrian’s old life culminated in a quiet, miserable warehouse on the industrial docks of South Chicago.

Two weeks after his exile, Adrian had attempted to piece together a pathetic alliance with a low-level Russian syndicate, hoping to use stolen corporate data to blackmail Vanguard Logistics. He didn't know that every encrypted server he accessed was routed directly through Lorenzo’s private firewall.
I stood in the shadows of the damp, concrete loading dock, watching through a pair of binoculars as two of Lorenzo’s enforcers tossed Adrian against a stack of wooden crates.
Adrian looked pathetic. His hair was greasy, his designer suit stained and torn, his face pale with raw terror as he begged for mercy.
Lorenzo stepped out from the darkness behind me, his long black coat billowing slightly in the damp dock wind. He didn't look at Adrian. He looked only at me.
"Do you want me to finish it?" Lorenzo asked quietly. "A word, and he disappears into Lake Michigan tonight. Permanently."
I lowered the binoculars. I thought about the three years of stolen memories, the chemical fog, the humiliation in front of forty family members, the cruel laughter, and the casual dismissal of my worth.
Then I looked at the man standing beside me—powerful, unyielding, and fiercely devoted to my survival and ascension.
"No," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "Let him live. Let him wander the streets of Chicago as a nameless, penniless beggar, watching every billboard, every corporate sign, and every newspaper headline bear my name. Let him live every single day knowing he threw away an empire because he was too stupid to see what was right in front of him."
Lorenzo smiled—a dark, approving slash of white teeth in the dim dock lighting.
"A far more cruel fate than death," Lorenzo agreed, sliding his hand into mine, his grip warm, calloused, and unbreakable. "You truly are a Moretti now, Sophia. Or rather... the Morettis belong to you."
As we walked back to the waiting black sedan, listening to the distant sound of Adrian sobbing in the rain behind us, I knew the game was over.
The woman who had walked into that Lake Forest dining room weeks ago—drugged, broken, and invisible—was dead.
In her place stood an empress.
And the ruthless mafia boss who had handed me the match? He wasn't my protector anymore.

He was my partner.
And together, we were going to rule the underworld.
