Chapter 6 - THE SILENT TRANSFORMATIONWithin forty-eight hours, the Moretti family estate felt entirely different. The oppressive, suffocating gloom that had hung over the halls for years seemed to dissipate, replaced by a crisp, sharp tension that bowed to a new reality.

Adrian was gone. Dumped on a rainy street corner in downtown Chicago with fifty dollars in his pocket and a one-way bus ticket to nowhere. Vanessa had been escorted off the property by armed guards, her expensive luggage tossed carelessly onto the gravel driveway behind her.

And I? I was no longer the shrinking, exhausted ghost hiding in oversized black dresses.

Dr. Kessler had been quietly and permanently retired to a private medical facility in the Swiss Alps, leaving behind his meticulous paper trail of forged prescriptions and neuro-suppressant logs. My system was already purging the toxins under the care of a trusted physician Lorenzo had flown in from Zurich.

I stood in front of the massive gilded mirror in the master wing—not the cramped guest room Adrian had banished me to, but the sprawling suite overlooking the twenty acres of gardens.

I wore a tailored emerald-green silk dress that clung to my curves with unapologetic confidence. My eyes were clear, bright, and sharp. The fog was entirely gone.

A soft knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door.

"Come in," I said.

The door opened, and Lorenzo stepped inside. He had changed into a dark tailored suit, his silver-threaded hair catching the afternoon light. He paused, his slate-gray eyes sweeping over me from head to toe. A rare, genuine flicker of appreciation warmed his usually impassive expression.

"You look..." Lorenzo began, pausing as if searching for the right word. "Magnificent."

"Thank you," I turned to face him, stepping closer. "Though I think 'formidable' is a more accurate description."

Lorenzo’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smirk. He closed the distance between us, stopping just inches away. The sheer physical presence of him—dangerous, magnetic, and completely unshakable—sent a thrill through my veins that I hadn't felt in years.

"Vanguard Logistics held its emergency shareholder meeting this morning," Lorenzo said quietly, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes. "With Adrian's shares voided and your dowry restored, you are now the majority voting stakeholder of the most lucrative shipping empire in the Midwest."

"Which means," I murmured, tilting my chin up to meet his intense gaze, "I am no longer just a beneficiary of your protection, Lorenzo. I am a peer."

Lorenzo’s hand reached out, his long fingers gently tracing the line of my jaw, right where his jacket had rested on the terrace nights ago.

"I always knew you were wasted on a fool like Adrian," Lorenzo whispered, his voice deep and rough. "I was just waiting for you to realize it too."
