Chapter 10 - The Last Laugh in Fort LauderdaleFar away from the glittering lights of the Palm Beach gala, under the buzzing neon sign of a fading 24-hour laundromat in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the rain poured down in heavy, relentless sheets.

Vanessa Donovan sat on a plastic folding chair outside a second-story studio apartment, wearing a stained oversized hoodie and cheap flip-flops. Her hair was pulled back into a messy, unwashed bun; her designer nails were chipped and broken.

Across the street, a small television mounted inside a diner window was broadcasting the evening news.

The screen flashed a crystal-clear image of me—smiling radiantly, standing beside Alexander Vance at the grand charity gala, hailed by national media as one of the most powerful and philanthropic business leaders in the country.

Beside my image, a smaller graphic showed Richard Donovan behind federal prison bars, clad in an orange jumpsuit, looking old, broken, and utterly forgotten.

Vanessa stared at the screen, her chest heaving with a mixture of bitter rage and hollow despair. She reached out to pick up a lukewarm cup of cheap takeout coffee, but her hand slipped, sending the dark liquid spilling across the dirty concrete floor.
