Chapter 6 - The Scramble of the RatsThe ballroom erupted into absolute, unadulterated chaos.

The moment the steel cuffs clicked around Richard Donovan’s wrists, the illusion of elite solidarity shattered completely. The four hundred guests—who had spent the afternoon sipping champagne and praising the Donovan family name—now scattered like roaches when the kitchen light is flipped on.
“Keep filming! Don't look at me!” Arthur Sterling barked, shielding his face with his program as local news crews, alerted by anonymous automated tips, swarmed the open doors of the resort.
Julian Sterling, the golden-boy groom whose family hotel empire depended entirely on high-society prestige, turned to Vanessa with a look of pure, unadulterated terror.
“Your father is going to federal prison, Vanessa,” Julian snapped, his voice shrill as he ripped his boutonnière from his lapel and threw it on the floor. “The wedding is canceled. My family is pulling all investments from Donovan Construction immediately. We are done.”
Vanessa stared at him, her mascara running down her cheeks in jagged black streaks. “Julian, wait! You can’t leave me! We just got married!”
“We didn't sign the registry yet, you gold-digging fraud!” Julian shoved past her, running toward the side exit as fast as his Italian leather shoes could carry him.
Vanessa dropped to her knees on the pristine white runner, her multi-thousand-dollar wedding dress pooling around her like a deflated parachute. She looked up at me, her eyes red, swollen, and filled with a desperate, pathetic plea.
“Claire…” she sobbed, crawling forward on her hands and knees. “Claire, please! You’re my sister! You can’t let them do this! Tell your husband to fix it! Please!”
I looked down at her, my expression completely neutral. There was no joy in her ruin, only the cold, heavy satisfaction of closure.
“When you watched them drag me toward the koi pond, Vanessa, did you remember that we were sisters?” I asked softly.
Vanessa choked on her tears, unable to answer.
“Take her off the property,” I instructed the security detail standing nearby. “And make sure her luggage is waiting for her at the public bus stop down the highway.”

As two guards lifted Vanessa screaming and clawing from the floor, dragging her bridal train across the dirty marble, the federal agents led Richard Donovan past me. My father kept his head down, his face grey, his spirit thoroughly crushed. He didn’t dare look me in the eye.
The grand Donovan dynasty—built on lies, cruelty, and stolen lives—had collapsed in less than twenty minutes.
