Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE CONCRETEMy blood ran colder than the hospital floor. I stared at the text message on my screen, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Who sent this? How did they know what happened? And why was Mark—my husband—in danger?

I immediately dialed Mark’s number. Ring... ring... ring... It went straight to voicemail.

Mark was an engineer for the city’s commercial development board. For the past six months, he had been working night shifts inspecting a massive luxury skyscraper project downtown built by Vanguard Enterprises—a mega-corporation owned by the city's most influential billionaire, Arthur Vance. Mark had been unusually stressed lately, barely speaking, jumping at every loud noise, and constantly locking his briefcase.

I grabbed the hospital nurse by her shoulders, my eyes wild. "Please, watch my baby! Keep police officers at her door!"

I sprinted to my car, Daisy jumping into the passenger seat beside me. We roared down the highway toward our house, my mind spinning. I needed to inspect that hidden pipe. I needed to know what Mark was hiding.

When I arrived home, the front door was slightly ajar.

Daisy growled deeply, the hair along her spine standing straight up. I grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from the kitchen and crept into the nursery.

The wall hole was larger now. Someone had tried to patch it hastily with expanding foam, but Daisy lunged forward, barking furiously, and ripped the fresh foam away with her teeth.

I shined my light deep inside the cavity, following the illegal PVC pipe downward. It didn't belong to our home's plumbing. It went straight through our floorboards into the foundation of the house, connecting directly to the main municipal water line running beneath our residential street!

Lying right next to the pipe inside the wall was a small, heavy steel flash drive wrapped in duct tape.

I pulled it out, my fingers trembling. Marked on the drive in faded ink were three letters: V.E.P.—Vanguard Environmental Poisoning.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway behind me.
